Senior Day Setback for Beavers
November 16, 2024 | Women's Volleyball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – A team-best 13 kills from Lauren Rumel and 19 assists from Emma Lilo proved to not be quite enough against San Diego on Saturday, as Oregon State fell in four sets on senior day.
For the second consecutive outing, the Beavers (8-16, 6-7 WCC) were held to a sub-.250 mark as the Toreros swept the last three frames after OSU took the first as the match ended at: 25-22, 17-25, 20-25.
Defensively, the combo of Annika Hester and Yasemin Narlioglu led the defense with seven digs apiece while Hester complemented the digs with nine kills and Amanda Burns' seven. Alara Doganyuz aided the attack with 13 assists and a team-best six service aces.
Coming out of the gates strong, the Beavers used a .323 clip to take set one from the Toreros. Rumel and Hester each put up four kills while Lilo dished a set-best six assists out to the attack. On defense, a trio of Beavers – Burns, Hester and Alexis Rodriguez – had two digs to help pace the defense. After nearly splitting the set's 21 points, Oregon State used a pair of runs – 3-1 and 4-0 – to break away for the first set win.
Keeping the Beavers in the red (-.056), the Toreros evened the match with a 25-17 set win in the second. Despite five kills from Rumel, the Beavers committed 11 attack errors to just two for San Diego in the frame. After being knotted at 8 apiece, San Diego broke the set open going 17-10 over OSU to end it.
A late 3-0 Torero run in the third proved to be the difference at 22-20 in grabbing their first lead of the day. Despite out-digging San Diego by a 12-11 margin, the Beavers committed two more attack errors in the five-point set loss. Vivian Light's four kills highlighted the improved Oregon State attack but wasn't enough to overcome the miscues to take the set.
A Narlioglu service error and a Torero block ended the hopes to take the match to a decisive fifth set for the third match in a row as San Diego held on for the 25-22 win. Despite being held to a .091 hitting rate, the Beavers led by as many as five (8-3) before yielding a 4-0 run at 9-5 to make it 9-all. Once the visitors knotted the scoreboard at 15, San Diego never trailed again, outscoring the Beavers 10-7 on the way to the win.
Oregon State will wind down the home slate with an in-state battle on Wednesday night. Portland will visit Gill Coliseum for a 7 p.m. match that can be seen on ESPN+.
