Beavers Fall to Pilots

PORTLAND – The Oregon State men's soccer team fell to Portland 3-2 Saturday evening at Merlo Field in Portland, Ore.
Sergi Solans found the net for the Beavers, scoring his 14th of the season, as he moved into a tie with Danny Mwanga for the fifth-highest single-season goals total in program history. Pol Morlans scored the Oregon State second in frenetic opening half.
As a team, the Beavers created a number of scoring chances throughout the match, out-shooting the Pilots 21-8. OSU forced five Portland saves.
Solans opened the scoring in the sixth minute, as he slotted one home from point-blank range after a nice cross from Enzo Newman. The Pilots answered less than a minute later on a penalty kick after a hand ball in the box.
Morlans netted his first of the year in the 15th minute, heading one home off a Beaver corner as the match got off to a frenzied start. The Pilots again answered, converting a header to even things up in the 20th.
Oregon State created a handful of scoring chances late in the first half, notably forcing a save on a shot from Solans. The teams headed to the break level at two.
The Pilots started the second half on the front-foot and proceeded to take the lead 3-2 in the 53rd minute.
Fabian Straudi took aim at trying to tie things up in the 56th minute, but his effort was blocked. Arnau Farnos followed that up by taking aim in the 65th, but again the Pilots were able to get in the way of the effort.
Farnos had the Beavers' best chance of the second half in the 75th minute, as he forced a save from seven yards out. Oregon State created a flurry of chances in the 84th minute, with Jacob Huth forcing a save, but could not even the score as the Pilots claimed the win.
The Beavers will now await the NCAA Tournament Selection Show, which will take place Monday at 10 a.m.
