Freshmen Shine in Busy Day on Dexter Lake
April 08, 2023 | Men's Rowing
DEXTER, Ore. – Oregon State put together multiple strong performances in a busy day that saw the no. 18 Beavs compete in 11 races between the Covered Bridge Regatta and a dual with no. 3 Washington.
The Beavers got encouraging performances from their Freshman 8+ boat throughout the day, beginning with a victory in the prelims to open the action. The first-year boat would go on to win the finals with a time of 6:22.88.
OSU's Freshman 4+ also won the prelims and took home the finals with a time of 07:08.23. The Varsity 4+ boat finished second in both the morning race and the finals in the early afternoon.
"Defend the Dam! The season premiere of the OSU Freshman 8+ and 4+ set the standard for years to come, going 4/4 in all of their races this weekend and taking home hardware from their home course," head coach Gabe Winkler said. "But, the team still has a ways to go to reach the potential we're seeing in this boathouse right now. The UW duels showed each of our 3 Varsity 8+'s what the elite programs are putting out there and just how far we can go. We have two weeks until those veteran boats head out to Philadelphia to face off against more premier teams."
The middle of the day saw OSU drop all three races in its Pac-12 dual with no. 3 Washington. The no. 18 Beavs hung with the Huskies for part of the Varsity 8 race, posting a time under six minutes, but ultimately dropped the race.
In the afternoon, the Beavers put together solid finishes in the eights portion of the Covered Bridge Regatta. OSU's 'A' group finished third in the 'A' race while the 'B' group placed sixth. The Beavs outraced Washington State and UC Davis.
In the 'B' race, the Oregon State 'C' boat placed third, outpacing the Washington State 'B' boat as well as Lewis & Clark and Sacramento State.
The Beavs will have two weeks to train before heading east to battle Penn, Cornell and Holy Cross in Philadelphia on April 29-30.
