Whitfield’s Top-Three Mark Closes Strong Weekend for Beavs
March 29, 2023 | Women's Track & Field
AUSTIN & SAN MARCOS, Tex.– Jade Whitfield closed a strong weekend for Oregon State Track and Field by breaking her own school record and posting the nation's third-best mark in the discus.
The redshirt sophomore unleashed a 58.36m/191-6 throw to put herself among the nation's best just two weeks after breaking the school record at the Oregon Preview. Along with Grace Fetherstonhaugh's no. 1 time on Friday, Whitfield gave the Beavs a top-three competitor in multiple events.
The duo also comprised two of the six new marks in the Oregon State top-three over the course of the week. Delaney Bahn (#3 Long Jump), Kaylee Mitchell (#2 5,000 Meters), Christina Geisler (#2 10,000 meters) and the 4x400 Relay team (#2) all recorded strong results as well.
"We had a solid weekend split up in two locations and can really start to see the pieces come together with contributions from so much of the roster," head coach Louie Quintana said. "Grace was huge, setting the early season NCAA lead in the 5K, and Kaylee had a big PR too. I know that she will be massive in a couple other events soon. I was really pumped to see Jade Whitfield beat a very good collegiate field in the discus and had a top-three mark in the country."
"Anneke also posted a top dozen mark in the NCAA in the heptathlon and we got big long jumps from Delaney Bahn, going over 6.00m in two competitions. We have taken some hits to our quality of depth on our team with untimely injuries, but have really hoped to see people really step up. And, stepping up we are seeing - Christina Geisler (10k), Ella Knott and Maryann Ackerman (Javelin), Markayla Billings (Hammer) and Emma Nelson (High Jump) are proving to be unsung heroes for us and are stepping up big time," Quintana continued.
Saturday's meet was heavy on throws and the Beavers delivered several strong performances. Taylor Crockem and Keely McLaughlin finished sixth and eighth in the shot put's 'A' section while Markayla Billings unleashed a 54.45m/178-8 hammer throw, a shade behind her career-best effort.
The Beavs also got a victory in the 'B' section of the 800 meters on Paige Sefried's career-best 2:15.84. Anneke Moersdorf was just a few inches shy of her own school record in the triple jump, ultimately posting a 12.39m/40-7.75 just two days after recording the no. 4 heptathlon in school history.
FRIDAY RECAP
Oregon State's Grace Fetherstonhaugh put together an all-time performance in the 5,000 meters on Friday night, racing into the NCAA lead and breaking her own school record by nearly 30 seconds.
Fetherstonhaugh's 15:30.55 time placed her second at the meet and first among collegians. She and Kaylee Mitchell (15:48.22) both outran the previous school record of 15:58.93 to highlight a strong overall day for the Beavs at four meets on Friday.
The duo were not the day's only highlights among the distance group, however. Christina Geisler turned in a 33:41.93 in the 10,000 meters, one of just 29 runners in the country to go under 33:45 this season. Her time is the second-best in school history and trailed the school record by 16 seconds.
Also in the Bay Area, four Oregon State distance runners recorded personal best times in the 1,500 meters. Jillian Brown, Kate Laurent, Teaghan Knox and Jamie Hamlin each posted a new PR in the event, the latter three running it for the second time as collegians.
The Beavers in Texas saw the highlight of their day in the 4x400 meter relay when Adael Scatena, Paige Sefried, Jada Hurley and Taylor Weidinger raced to a 3:45.16. The mark is the second-best in school history.
Delaney Bahn also posted an OSU top-three mark, reaching 6.09m/19-11.75 in the long jump. She was just 1 ¼-inch shy of the school record and finished fourth in her section of the long jump at the Texas Relays. Bahn then traveled down the road to San Marcos and placed third in the Bobcat Invite with a 6.07m/19-11 long jump.
In late-arriving Thursday news, Maryann Ackerman earned a spot in the OSU Top 10. The redshirt freshman powered the ninth-best javelin throw in school history with a 45.06m/147-10 toss. Ackerman finished fourth, one spot above fellow Beav Ella Knott, who threw 44.28m/145-3.
THURSDAY RECAP
Anneke Moersdorf thoroughly outpaced her previous PR in the heptathlon and Jade Whitfield placed third in the discus to highlight a solid second day for Oregon State in the Lone Star State.
Moersdorf closed the heptathlon in ninth among a strong field at the Texas Relays with 5,409 points, the fourth-most in school history. Whitfield's 54.79m/179-9 toss was her second of the season to surpass 179 feet, which only 18 throwers in the country had done one time entering the day.
Moersdorf, fresh off a three-PR day on Wednesday, nearly reset the school record in the long jump to open the day. She missed by half an inch with a 6.11m/20-0.5 leap but did win the event to make a big leap in the standings.
After a tough showing in the javelin, Moersdorf posted another PR with a 2:20.00 in the 800 meters. The junior shaved five seconds off her previous best and solidified her spot among the top 10 in a talented field at the Texas Relays.
Taylor Weidinger also posted a strong result in Austin, recording her second straight personal best in the 400-meter hurdles. Her 1:02.13 time outpaced her 1:02.73 personal record from the previous week at the Willamette Invitational.
WEDNESDAY RECAP
Anneke Moersdorf started a busy week for Oregon State Track and Field with two personal bests and one OSU Top 10 time in the first day of the heptathlon.
Moersdorf closed the day in 12th place with 3,229 points. Her personal best in the heptathlon is 4,891, which ranks seventh all-time at Oregon State. The long jump, javelin and 800 meters are on the docket for Thursday.
The redshirt junior started the day by jumping a spot in the Oregon State Top 10 in the 100 meter hurdles. Moersdorf's 14.22-second time outpaced her previous best by .09 seconds and moved her up to sixth on the all-time list. She followed that with a near-PB in the high jump, clearing 1.65m/5-5.
The San Luis Obispo native improved with each attempt in the shot put, eventually finishing with a PR of 11.82m/38-9.5. She closed the day with another personal best, a 25.54 in the 200 meters.
