Beavers Down Mizzou, CSUN to Open Mary Nutter
February 24, 2023 | Softball
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – The Oregon State softball team opened play in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic on Friday with a sweep of their competition, beating #21 Missouri and CSUN. With the wins, Oregon State (6-6) has now won three consecutive contests.
"I thought the players did well," noted head coach Laura Berg. "They had some 'at-'ems' in the first game, but they powered through. In the second game, they had some great at-bats and Tarni (Stepto) and Ellie (Garcia) worked well together. Overall, it was a great day and I'm proud of the team."
Game 1: OSU 3, No. 21 Missouri 2
Trailing for the game's entirety, Oregon State flipped the game with three unanswered runs to walk off the 21st-ranked Missouri Tigers. In the seventh and down by just a run, OSU loaded the bases to threaten the SEC foe. Abby Doerr drove in Eliana Gottlieb for the tying run off her groundout to first. In the very next at-bat, Morgan Howey's single to right scored Jade Soto for the winning run.
Down by two, Frankie Hammoude got the Beavers on the board with a solo home run to straightaway center to break up a gem by Taylor Panell. The blast was Hammoude's third of the season. Mizzou found their two runs from leadoff triples in the fourth and fifth innings.
Sarah Haendiges (3-2) picked up the complete game win, where she struck out four, walked just a pair but surrendered the two runs.
OSU dealt Missouri their first loss in nine games and marked the sixth win in seven games in the series against the Tigers.
Game 2: OSU 5, CSUN 1
The Beavers' hot bats did not go anywhere as the offense kept going for a 5-1 win in the nightcap, where they downed CSUN by a 5-1 score.
Abby Doerr – a Coburg, Oregon, native – powered the Beavers to the win with five runs batted in off her first two homers as a Beaver. She broke open the scoring with a solo shot in the third and then padded the lead with a grand slam in the fifth. The slam came with just one out and let Oregon State cruised to the result.
Tarni Stepto (2-2) was credited with the win over the Matadors. In 4.0 innings of work, she fanned three and yielded just one free pass. With 3.0 innings of action, Ellie Garcia earned the save – allowing the sole CSUN run but striking out four.
OSU will continue play in California with a twinbill against Cal State Fullerton and Ohio State. The first pitch of game one is set for 10 a.m. and can be seen exclusively on FloSoftball.
