Balanced Attack, Stifling Defense Key Blowout Win
November 17, 2023 | Women's Basketball
CORVALLIS, Ore. -Â Oregon State took its first lead with 8:10 left in the first quarter and never relinquished in in a dominating 86-48 win over UC Davis on Friday night.
Â
The victory was the Beavers' first without any real drama as they simply outplayed the opposition on both ends of the floor, leading by 28 at halftime and 38 at the final whistle. The Beavs held UC Davis to 27 percent shooting from the field and 26.5 percent from three while blocking six shots.
Â
Timea Gardiner earned her first double-double in orange and black with 16 points and a career best 13 rebounds. Raegan Beers recorded her third double-double in as many games to open the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds before sitting most of the fourth quarter.
Â
Talia von Oelhoffen once again steadied the attack with nine points, six assists and five rebounds. She also blocked a shot and picked up a steal.
Â
After initially playing to a near-draw with a 9-8 lead with 6:16 remaining in the first quarter, the Beavers outpaced the Aggies 14-2 for the remainder of the period – with eight of those points coming from AJ Marotte, part of a 10-point game for the junior.
Â
The Beavs essentially put the game away in the second, winning it 23-8. Beers and Kennedie Shuler led OSU with six points apiece in the quarter while Lily Hansford added a steal and a triple. Shuler finished the game with 11 points, her first in double-figures as a Beaver.
Â
Sela Heide made her Oregon State debut in the game, scoring four points off assists from Gardiner and Adlee Blacklock. The Beaver legacy was an intimidating presence in the paint and scored both baskets at the rim.
Â
The Beavs closed the game shooting 55.2 percent from the field and 55.6 percent from three. OSU made 80 percent of its free throws.
Â
Oregon State returns to Gill Coliseum on Wednesday, November 22 for a 6 p.m. game against UMBC.
