Beavers Pounce on Princeton
January 13, 2023 | Wrestling
AUSTIN – The 26th-ranked Oregon State wrestling team took seven of the 10 bouts – including four of the night's first five – to defeat Princeton by a 22-9 margin in the FloWrestling Showcase in Austin, Texas.
Facing a 3-0 deficit after the first matchup, #18 Jason Shaner (133) used a pair of takedowns in the first frame for a 4-2 advantage to seize the early lead. Following an escape when starting the second, Shaner tallied his third takedown for the five-point cushion. Following that, he upped his lead to the winning margin of 14-7 to even the dual.
Cleveland Belton – ranked 26th at 141 lbs – jumped to a 4-1 lead after just one frame that saw him clock 1:24 of riding time. A reversal out of a takedown by his opponent swung the momentum his way as he entered the third with an 8-1 lead. An escape and takedown led to a win by major decision and gave the Beavers a lead they would not relinquish.
Despite conceding an early takedown, Riley Gurr won a closely contested match at the 149-lb. weight class. After the first, he tallied six of the bout's final seven to win the decision and stretch the advantage.
A late takedown in the first by Isaiah Crosby (157) gave him the momentum needed for a big win decision. The Miami, Fla. clocked over two minutes of riding time en route to a 13-6 decision.
Princeton halted the Beavers' hot streak when fourth-ranked Quincy Monday defeated No. 21 Matthew Olguin in the 165-lb. bout. Olguin, down 3-1 with mere seconds remaining, recorded the necessary takedown for sudden victory. Despite the comeback, Monday prevailed in the extra session.
With the advantage trimmed to seven, reigning Pac-12 wrestler of the week, Mateo Olmos, won via decision at 6-2. Olmos used an escape and a takedown for a 5-0 advantage to the third, where he finished things off for the win.
11th-ranked Trey Munoz (184) helped secure the win for Oregon State as he added a 7-3 win by decision over Nate Dugan. Up 6-2 in the late stages of the third, he and Dugan traded escapes before the clock showed zeros.
18th-ranked Tanner Harvey (197) and 20th-ranked Luke Stout were in the bout of the night in the penultimate tussle. Deadlocked through one and an escape from Harvey were all that separated the two going into the last frame. Stout grabbed the first takedown in the third and looked to take the win, but the Elkton, Oregon, product flipped it at the end. Harvey used every second in securing the ranked win.
Oregon State will stay east as they'll open Pac-12 competition at Little Rock on Sunday. The dual is set for 11 a.m. PT and can be seen on Little Rock's live stream.
