Beavers Drop UNC/CSU Classic Finale to Cal Poly, 3-1
September 21, 2019 | Women's Volleyball
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Oregon State volleyball team fell to Cal Poly, 3-1, in the final match of the UNC/CSU Classic Saturday morning. This completes the preseason for the Beavers who are now set to host their home opening against Oregon on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Gill Coliseum.
The loss moves OSU to 6-5 while the Mustangs, who were receiving votes in this week's coaches poll, improve to 7-5. Set scores were 25-23, 21-25, 15-25 and 15-25.
"It is unfortunate," head coach Mark Barnard said. "This was a winnable match but we were done in with poor passing again and that just kills our limited offense. Kory Cheshire was very good today, but we just didn't have much else to back her up."
Oregon State used an early 5-0 run fueled by a barrage of kills from Shekinah Clark, Kory Cheshire and Maddie Goings to take the lead at 7-4. The Beavers pushed the lead to 20-14 behind stellar defense from Cheshire and Clarke, who combined for three blocks during the stretch. The Mustangs scraped their way back to tie the score at 23-23, but Haylie Bennett put it away with a kill to take the set and the lead in the match, 25-23.
OSU fell behind in the early stages of the second set, but fought back to tie the score at 10-10 following a Cheshire kill, then a block by Cheshire and Maddie Sheehan, and another kill from Sheehan. A second flurry from the Beavers driven by the middle blockers with Lindsey Schell providing a kill and a block and Cheshire another kill, tied the score again at 13-13. Once again Cal Poly had an answer regaining the lead and though the Oregon State hung in, the Beavers could not take the lead, ultimately dropping the set, 25-21.
Cal Poly carried its momentum into the third frame and used an early 9-1 run to take the lead at 13-5. Oregon State struggled to answer pulling together a 4-1 run midway through the game, based around a kill and an ace from Goings, but it wouldn't be enough as the Mustangs took the set, 25-15, and the lead in the match.
The Mustangs used the same formula in the fourth. With the Beavers leading 10-9, Cal Poly strung together seven straight points to take a 16-10 advantage and hung on to seal the set, 25-15, and the match.
Game Notes: Kory Cheshire and Shekinah Clarke led the Oregon State offense with nine kills each … Cheshire added a team-high five blocks and Maddie Goings registered a team-leading 10 digs to lead the defense.
Next Up: Oregon State finally returns to Corvallis to host its home opener when the Beavers open Pac-12 play against Oregon on Thursday, Sept. 26. The match is set for a 5:30 p.m. start and will be broadcast on Pac-12 Network.
