Oregon State Drops Both on First Day in Oklahoma

Norman, Okla. – Oregon State softball dropped games to both No. 11/11 Louisiana and No. 4/4 Oklahoma on the first day of the Courtyard Marriot Tournament in Norman, Okla.
GAME ONE vs No. 11/11 LOUISIANA
Senior Meehra Nelson struck out two batters and Bailey McLaughlin threw out a runner trying to steal second in the bottom of the first, but not before Louisiana took an early 3-0 lead following an early batter that was hit by a pitch and a fielding error by OSU.
Nelson struck out two more batters to limit UL from extending the lead in the bottom of the second.
Oregon State made its first advance in the top of the third following freshman Maia Rader hitting a single right back to Louisiana's pitcher. Rader went on to steal second on a passed ball by UL's catcher, but finished the inning stranded on second.
UL extended its lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the third. OSU got out of the inning after freshman Izzy Owen knocked down a hard hit that she was able to throw to Frankie Hammoude at first then Hammoude threw it to McLaughlin who tagged the runner coming home for a double play. Junior Nerissa Eason came in to pitch and struck out the final batter of the inning.
The Beavers held off the Rajun Cajins again in the bottom of the fourth highlighted by another double play when Rader caught a line drive and threw the runner out at first who wasn't tagging.
Louisiana went on the score three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take the game, 8-0.
GAME TWO vs No. 4/4 OKLAHOMA
Jessica Garcia tried to get things going for the Beavers in the second game of the day with a single in the top of the first inning. Garcia then stole second base, her ninth of the season and 43rd of her career. Missy Nunes flied out to left field but advanced Garcia to third, but didn't capitalize.
Oklahoma loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the second inning. OU hit one hard back to Nunes threw it to McLaughlin to get the runner going home for the first out of the inning. Chance Burden would catch a fly-foul ball down the left-field line, but the Sooners would score after tagging to take a 1-0 lead.
The Sooners would extend its lead in the bottom of the third inning with a solo home run and again in the bottom of the fourth to take a 3-0 lead.
Oregon State tried to cut the lead in the top of the fourth when Nunes, Hammoude and Shafer all hit singles, but all three were stranded. OSU made another attempt in the sixth after Mariah Mazon was walked and Burden reached on a fielding error but didn't get anyone across home. OSU tried again in the top of the seventh when Camryn Ybarra came in to pinch hit and was walked. Weeks singled to put two runners on and the tying run at the plate, but Oklahoma got out of the inning to capture the 3-0 victory.
Mazon pitched a complete game from the circle striking out three OU batters.
Oregon State will return to action in Norman tomorrow against Louisiana at 9:30 a.m. PT and Oklahoma at 2:30 p.m. PT.
