Bresser, Dhesi Pick up Wins on Senior Night

CORVALLIS – The Oregon State wrestling team made a strong comeback, but fell short against Stanford on senior night inside of Gill Coliseum on Friday evening. The Beavers (4-8, 2-2 Pac-12) dropped the contest to the Cardinal (8-3, 2-1 Pac-12) by a final score of 19-16 in the 44th all-time meeting between the two schools.

Tonight's match was produced by OSU Athletics, in conjunction with OSU Academic Technology, for the Pac-12 Network. OSU is among the leaders in the country, and one of only three Pac-12 institutions, to produce live sports programming for national television distribution.

Redshirt senior Ronnie Bresser got the night started off with some fireworks in his last bout inside of Gill Coliseum. No. 3-ranked Bresser battled a ranked opponent in No. 20 Gabe Townsell. A quick takedown put Bresser up early as he rode out Townsell for a 4-0 lead after the first period.

Stanford got their first win of the evening at 133 pounds. Devan Turner couldn't find any ground against Mason Pengilly as he fell by decision, 4-0.

At 141 pounds Grant Willits pushed his win streak to 3-0 with a 9-3 decision over Brandon Kier (Stanford). Willits secured the first takedown after a re-attack off a shot from Kier, and led 2-1 after the first. A second-period reversal and two takedown in the third period secured the win and three team points for the Beavers.

The Cardinal used wins at 149 and 157 pounds gaining the first team lead of the evening. At 149 pounds, senior Josh Reyes lost a 6-1 decision to No. 15 Requir van der Merwe (Stanford), while Zech Bresser dropped a major decision to Paul Fox (Stanford), 13-3.

Oregon State trailed Stanford at the midway intermission 10-8.

The Beavers dropped back to back decisions out of the break at 165 and 174 pounds. Aaron Olmos took No. 18 Dominick Mandarino to sudden victory, but fell by decision 3-1. Colt Doyle held a lead for the majority of the match against Rico Stormer, but gave up a takedown in the final minute falling by decision, 7-6.

Hermiston native Bob Coleman picked up a win at 184 pounds coming from behind to do so. Colbey Harlan (Stanford) scored a takedown on Coleman in the opening seconds, but the junior rebounded for an escape and takedown in the first period. Coleman used two more takedown in the third period winning by decision, 11-9.

Jamarcus Grant had a tough matchup at 197 pounds facing No. 9 Nathan Traxler (Stanford). Grant got in on a shot early, but couldn't find much offense against the former NCAA qualifier, falling by decision 7-1.

In the final bout of the evening No. 3 Amar Dhesi ended his career in Gill Coliseum in outstanding fashion. Leading 6-4 after two periods, Dhesi put on an offensive clinic scoring seven takedown in the third period to go along with a four-point near fall. Dhesi won by technical fall, 25-10.

Stanford won the dual by a final score of 19-16.
