Beavers Knock Off No. 18 Georgetown at Stanford Invite

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. – The Oregon State men's rowing team raced three ranked teams at the Stanford Invitational over the weekend. The Beavers' Varsity 8 and Junior Varsity 8 crews each recorded wins over No. 18 Georgetown.

"We raced some strong boats this weekend," associate head coach Dameon Engblom said. "The highlight of the weekend was certainly winning our races against Georgetown, who we typically contend with for a spot at the national championships. So to have a head-to-head win over those crews is a big deal."

OSU's V8 crewed by Jesse Maritz, Roman Pjajka, Baxter Call, Jacob Hart, Glenn Miller, Hunter Smith, Jacob Randall and Neall Koetje and coxed by Ercoli Crugnale, pushed past the Hoyas' crew to record the win with a time of 5-minutes, 57.7-seconds to Georgetown's 5:54.0 on Saturday afternoon.

In the JV8, Oregon State pulled out the win in the closest race of the weekend going stroke for stroke with the Hoyas. The Beavers' crew of Max McDonald, Sasha Kosek, Alex Carlton, Zach Fried, C.J. Wallace, Miles Moran, Max Shaffer and Nils Patrick and coxed by Ben Garrison, held on for the victory by 2-hundredths of a second, 5:52.4-5:52.6.

The Beavers' Third Varsity 8 made it a clean sweep in Saturday afternoon racing by defeating Santa Clara (6:31.9) with a time of 6:10.6. OSU's 3V8, which had previously beaten Santa Clara in March month at the Lake Las Vegas Invitational, improved the margin of victory from four seconds to 21 seconds.

"The team is showing that it has learned how to get faster as the season has gone on. That's great to see as we head into the second half of our season."

On Sunday, OSU took on crews from No. 10 Wisconsin. The Beavers held their own against the Badgers with the 3V8 of Zach Niedermeyer, Nick Taylor, Hunter Rust, Andrew McSween, Tyler Gray, Timothy Shearer, Austin DeMartine and Camron Gharib with Nick West as the coxswain, turned in the best performance hanging close and crossing the finish two seconds behind, 6:27.4-6:29.7.

Both of the Beavers' V8 and JV8 also held contact throughout the course but ultimately fell to the Badgers.

Oregon State also faced No. 1 California on Saturday morning with the Bears taking all three races.

The Beavers are idle next week before hosting races against Gonzaga and Stanford on back-to-back weekends at Dexter Lake, April 28 and May 5.
