Bresser, Griego and Dhesi Capture Pac-12 Titles
February 25, 2018 | Wrestling
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Ronnie Bresser (125), Corey Griego (197) and Amarveer Dhesi (285) captured individual titles as four Oregon State wrestlers qualified for the NCAA Wrestling Championships on Sunday at the Pac-12 Wrestling Championships in Gill Coliseum.
Arizona State won its second consecutive Pac-12 title with 96 points, while the Beavers finished in second place with 70. CSU Bakersfield (52.5), Stanford (47.5) and Cal Poly (37) were third to fifth place respectively.
157-pounder Hunter Willits placed second to become just the second freshman in head coach Jim Zalesky's tenure to qualify for the national tournament; the other was Amarveer Dhesi. Willits earned his spot in the finals, and thus the NCAAs, with a 6-5 decision over Paul Fox of Stanford.
The freshman trailed 5-4 in the waning moments of regulation, before securing the victory by decision 6-5.
Bresser (21-4) was the Pac-12 champion in 2015 and notched his second Pac-12 title by defeating Ryan Millhof of Arizona State 3-2. Bresser lost the only meeting between the two on Jan. 21 at Arizona State. This is the third NCAA berth for Bresser in his career at Oregon State.
Bresser and Millhof were tied 2-2 at the end of regulation with the only takedown of the match going to OSU, however the Klamath Falls native had secured the ride time point giving him the win. Bresser eclipsed 20 wins in a season for the third time of his career.
Griego (21-5) won his second consecutive Pac-12 title at 197 pounds. Griego rolled to an 11-5 victory over former high school teammate Matt Williams, pushing his win streak to 10 in a row.
Griego jumped out to a 2-0 lead and never relinquished it as he qualified for the NCAA championships for the third time in his career. Griego is 10-1 since the start of the new year.
Amar Dhesi (20-3) pushed his win streak to 11 in a row with his perfect performance on Sunday at the Pac-12 championships. Dhesi faced No. 8 Nathan Butler of Stanford in the finals, and cruised to a major decision victory, 11-2.
Dhesi was awarded the Pac-12 Wrestling Championships Most Outstanding Wrestler for the second time in his career. He is a two-time Pac-12 champion at heavyweight, and was an all-american in 2016.
Jack Hathaway (141), Josh Reyes (149) and Myles Terry (174) each earned a third place finish. Terry had a shot at a spot at nationals in a true second place match, but lost to Keaton Subjeck of Stanford.
