Beavers Battle Back, Fall to Aggies
December 16, 2018 | Women's Basketball
LAHAINA, Hawaii –The No. 8 Oregon State women's basketball team battled to overcome an early deficit, but fell to Texas A&M 76-70 Saturday evening at the Maui Jim Maui Classic in Lahaina, Hawaii.
Â
"This was a great game between two good teams," said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. "They were the aggressive team to start the game. They beat us to the punch, but once we were able to match it, this became a good game. I was really proud of the effort and courage it took to get back in this game. It took a lot of grit and determination from our team, but you have to give them a lot of credit for making the plays they needed to down the stretch."
Â
Oregon State trailed by as many as 16 in the game, and battled back to get within one in the closing moments before falling by six.
Â
Senior Katie McWilliams hit numerous big shots in the contest, as she finished with 19 points on her way to All-Tournament honors. Sophomore Aleah Goodman followed up Friday's 22-point performance by scoring 14 points.
Â
Junior Mikayla Pivec tallied 10 points and eight rebounds, while senior Joanna Grymek recorded eight points and six rebounds.
Â
As a team, the Beavers shot 47.5 percent from the floor, and held Texas A&M to 44.1 percent shooting. The teams finished even on rebounds at 33.
Â
Texas A&M used an early scoring run to jump in front 13-3. The Aggies finished the first quarter up 24-14.
Â
The Beavers fell behind by 16 in the second frame, but battled back to get back within single digits with three minutes left in the half. Oregon State headed to the intermission trailing 42-32.
Â
Goodman led the Beavers with nine first-half points, while McWilliams entered the break with seven.
Â
Oregon State cut into the lead in the third quarter, moving within seven in the middle portion of the period. The Beavers used a 6-0 run to get within three late in the frame to head to the closing period down 53-50.
Â
OSU came out firing in the fourth, leveling the score at 56 less than two minutes into the frame. Texas A&M retook the lead from there, as the Beavers remained within striking distance.
