Varsity Four Victorious Over Bulldogs

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Oregon State women's rowing team picked up two victories over Gonzaga Saturday morning at Silver Lake just outside of Spokane, Wash.
"Today the team as a whole demonstrated that they want to race and proved that they are willing to do whatever it takes," said interim head coach Allison Foster. "The athletes are all walking away proud to have put their best foot forward thus far, and they know that more speed will come as they learn to pace themselves to sustain the lead for the entire race."
The Beavers started the morning with a victory over the Bulldogs in the Varsity 4. It was a close race with the Gonzaga 'A' boat through the first 1,000 meters, but the OSU crew found another level in the last 750-meters of the race to take over first and clock in a time of 7:36.78.
The Second Varsity 8 created a boat length lead in the first 1,000-meters, but steady speed from the Bulldogs shortened the gap. The Beavers battled to the finish line and beat Gonzaga (6:46.64) by nearly a full second, to post a final time of 6:45.78.
The Orange and Black's Varsity 8 powered by, Alina Hagstrom, Eliza Adams, Mimi Ballinger, Mimi Grosselius, Paige Phillips, Bayly Camp, Maddie Vinson, and Olivia Ashby, and coxed by Bailey Daniels, covered the 2,000-meter course in 6:42.98.
"The Varsity 8 went off the line too hard to sustain, but watching that fire and determination play out in the first 500-meters was an example of grit this team needs to continue fighting for this season."
Oregon State's Third Varsity fought hard, but struggled with water conditions and lack of experience in the 13 mph cross tailwind, to clock a final time of 7:49.37.
"The Third Varsity is optimistic that with more strokes they can improve dramatically and translate their hard work on land to success on the water."
