ATHENS, Ga. – The Oregon State women's golf team competed against some of the best teams in the country the past three days and concluded the 44th Annual Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic with another narrow loss.
The Beavers fell 3-2 to Auburn in Sunday's final match-play competition at the par-72, 6,307-yard University of Georgia Golf Course. Oregon State narrowly lost to No. 1 Duke and No. 7 Arkansas on Saturday.
“Today we battled back from being down and had a chance to win the decisive match on the last hole,” Oregon State head coach Sammie Chergo said. “Unfortunately, we came up just a bit short losing 3-2.”
The 12-team tournament featured one qualifying round of stroke play on Friday. The top-eight teams were put in the “red” bracket and the remaining four teams went in the “black” bracket.
The field included eight teams in the top 14 in golfstat.com's latest rankings, including teams that have combined to win 13 of the past 16 NCAA Championships.
Oregon State senior Chelsea Saelee and sophomore Haley Nist notched wins against Auburn on Sunday, as Saelee defeated Alex Harrell, 1-up, and Nist knocked off Kelli Murphy, 2-and-1.
Freshman Olivia Benzin went 2-0 against Duke and Arkansas on Saturday and had another tough match against Auburn's Jamie Yun that went down to the final hole.
“It was great to see Chelsea finish her match strong to get a win,” Chergo said. “Olivia and Haley showed great competitive spirit today in their matches. Our group gained valuable experience this week and continues to improve. We look forward to getting back to the west coach and competing at ASU next week.
The Beavers get right back to action at the ASU Invitational, which will be held April 8-10 in Tempe, Ariz.
