Nist and Swanson Pace Beavs to Third Place
March 08, 2016 | Women's Golf
Haley Nist shot a final round even par 72 to join teammate Hannah Swanson with a two-round total of 1-over-par 145 to pace the Oregon State women's golf team to a third place finish at the rain-shortened Bay Area Intercollegiate at the Meadow Club in Fairfax, Calif.
The Beavers finished the event at 15-over 591, trailing only team champion No. 14 California at 583 and No. 33 Colorado at 586. OSU finished ahead of three teams in the 13-team field that are among the top 50.
“Our team gained valuable experience today playing in the final round with the lead,” Beaver head coach Sammie Chergo said. “Although we came up a bit short of the win, third place is an excellent result. We finished ahead of several ranked teams and this is a great way to continue our momentum into finals week and the break.”
Nish and Swanson finished tied for sixth place overall in the 36-hole tournament that was originally scheduled for 54 holes.
“Our underclassmen Haley and Hannah are showing a lot of growth gaining great experience,” Chergo added.
The rest of the Beaver contingent included Ashlee Pickerell and Olivia Benzin finishing tied for 32nd at 152 and Chelsea Saelee tied for 52nd at 156. Pickerell concluded the tournament co-leading the field for scoring on the par 3 holes at 2-under-par while OSU carded the most birdies in the tournament overall with 31.
Hannah Suh of California won medalist honors at 140.
The Beavers take the next few weeks off before returning to competition April 1-3 at the Liz Murphy Invitational in Athens, Ga.
