SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Oregon State women's soccer team out-shot San Diego 20-4, but could not find the decisive goal as the teams battled to a 0-0 draw Sunday afternoon in San Diego, Calif. The Beavers' placed a dozen shots on frame in the match, but all 12 of the efforts were saved.
With the draw, Oregon State wraps up its nonconference slate with a record of 4-1-3. The shutout is the fourth for the Beavers this season, and the seventh career clean sheet for sophomore goalkeeper Bella Geist.
Sophomore Nikki Faris tallied seven shots in the match. Freshman Toni Malone finished with six.
The Beavers created their first scoring chance of the game in the 14th minute, when Faris forced a save with a shot from the left side of the box. Fellow sophomore Emma Jones fired a shot from distance in the 34th, but the effort missed the frame by a few yards.
The Oregon State defense held firm throughout the first half, holding the Toreros without a shot in the opening 45 minutes.
The Beavers pushed forward in the second half, enjoying some good possession in the San Diego (1-6-2) end early in the closing frame. Faris came close to finding the net in the 58th minute, but the Torero keeper just got her fingertips to the ball to deny the effort. The Beavers came close to finding the breakthrough again just minutes later, but back-to-back shots from Malone were blocked inside the box.
Malone came very close to setting up a goal in the 81st minute, when her through-ball put Faris in on goal. The San Diego keeper was quick off her line, though, smothering Faris' shot attempt. It was Malone again placing a shot on frame with three minutes left in regulation, but the effort was tipped over the bar and the teams headed to overtime.
Oregon State continued to attack in the first overtime period, but shots from Malone and Jones couldn't provide the decisive blow. Faris provided the best opportunity of the second overtime period, when she got her head on the end of a cross from Jones, but the keeper denied the attempt. Geist came up with a big save in the 104th minute, stopping a shot from close range to preserve the clean sheet, as the teams completed 110 minutes with a scoreless tie.
The Beavers will open Pac-12 play Saturday on the road against USC.
