Beavers Take Four of Five From Zags
March 22, 2015 | Women's Rowing
SPOKANE, Wash. – The Oregon State women's rowing team won four out of five races at Gonzaga Sunday morning in the squad's season opener.
“It was a solid day of racing for the whole team,” head coach Emily Ford said. “It was nice to get the wins in the 2V8, 3V8 and the 4's. The Varsity 8 put together 75-percent of a great race. We didn't shift gears at the end and we'll have to get better at that. Overall, it was a good first outing for us, we learned a lot, and we're ready to get back to work in preparation for Redwood Shores next weekend.”
Oregon State's V8, which includes Paige Phillips, Bayly Camp, Anna Taylor, Lauren Still, Emily Wright, Saasha Bruce, Chen Oshri and Jessica Stewart with Simone Oberholzer as the coxswain, got out to a clean start and held the lead throughout most of the race moving to a six-seat lead through 1,000 meters. But Gonzaga made a late push in the final 500m to pull out the narrow win, 7-minutes, 1.16-seconds to OSU's 7:01.73.
Shortly after, the Beavers' Second Varsity 8 consisting of Arcata Leavitt (cox), Katie Low, Mimi Grosselius, Mikaela Kramer, Breanna Burns, Kyrie Miller, Isabella Preble, Theresa O'Leary and Julie Stark, came out quickly gaining a full boat-length lead halfway through the race and went on to capture the victory, 7:17.62 to 7:21.24.
In the early race, OSU's Third Varsity 8 coxed by Danielle Palatin and rowed by Bridgett Eby, Joely Hannan, Ellie Lesch, Lily Banks, Natalie Sarff, Kirra McCollom, Alyssa Beamer and Athena Loos, trounced the competition. The Beavers' boat finished in 7:38.67, 19-seconds ahead of Gonzaga's at 7:57.18.
The Beavers' 4's were dominant as well with the Varsity 4+ of Lindsay Taylor, Olivia Ashby, Gabriela Tan-Smith, Anna Peterson and directed by Hailey Page, earning a 14-second win 8:24.55 to 8:38.91. OSU's Second Varsity 4+ coxed by Taylor Adams and powered by Alissa Kummer, Sara Dunagan, Emily Wayland and Lihani du Plessis raced to a 17-second victory 8:23.14 to 8:40.17.
The Beavers are back in action next Saturday, March 28, for the Pac-12 Challenge at Redwood Shores, Calif.
