BERKELEY, Calif. – The Oregon State women's soccer team held California scoreless for over 85 minutes, but was unable to hold the clean sheet, as the Golden Bears scored a late winner to take a 1-0 victory Sunday afternoon in Berkeley, Calif.
Sophomore goalkeeper Bella Geist played another impressive match for the Beavers (5-5-3, 1-4-0 Pac-12), recording six saves to bring her career total to 187, one shy of sixth on Oregon State's all-time list. Sophomore Emma Jones notched four shots in the contest, while junior Annie Govig recorded a pair of attempts on goal.
Sophomore Nikki Faris created the Beavers' first chance of the afternoon, taking a shot that drifted just wide. Jones followed that up by rattling the woodwork with a shot off the crossbar in the 22nd minute.
Jones proceeded to force a save with a shot in the 43rd, before sophomore Kayla Latham took aim in the 44th, but neither effort could beat the keeper and the first half ended at 0-0.
Freshman Allison Pantuso produced OSU's first shot of the second half, heading the ball wide in the 55th minute. Govig came back with a shot in the 67th minute, but the attempt was blocked. Senior Gwen Bieck unloaded a shot in the 82nd minute, but again the effort was off target.
Cal (9-3-2, 3-2-0) finally found the breakthrough in the 86th minute, hammering home the rebound off an initial save from Geist. The Beavers would press forward in the dying minutes, but could not equalize, as the Bears secured the victory.
Oregon State will return to action Saturday, when it plays host to defending conference champion UCLA.
