Beavers Finish Second in Quad Meet
January 31, 2015 | Women's Gymnastics
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State scored 195.800 and set a season-high mark on the uneven bars but stumbled in the final rotation finishing second to No. 17 Washington in a home quad meet Friday night.
The Beavers, who led throughout the first three events, counted a fall for the first time in 2015 on the floor exercise to drop the meet to the Huskies 196.300-195.800. Sacramento State finished third with a score of 193.200 and Hamline University scored 184.025. OSU gymnasts won or tied for top honors on each event with Madeline Gardiner scoring 9.90 on vault, Erika Aufiero posting a 9.925 on uneven bars and Chelsea Tang scoring 9.90 on balance beam and 9.85 on the floor exercise.
Oregon State held the lead 147.525-147.150 heading into the final rotation, the floor exercise. Lead off Kailie Ponto performed a nice routine before landing awkwardly on her final tumbling pass. She would finish her routine and scored 9.775 but was carried off the floor with a left knee injury. A fall out of bounds by the subsequent competitor, Nicole Turner, put the Beavers on the brink but senior Cerise Witherby corrected the team's course with a season-best 9.825. Tang posted a season-high score of 9.85 and Risa Perez scored 9.825. However, OSU's final competitor, Gardiner, who has battled illness for a week, ran out of gas falling on her second tumbling pass.
“We didn't take the opportunity,” head coach Tanya Chaplin said. “They have to get in there and make sure they don't give a meet to another team. I'm really frustrated with that because they are capable of a lot more and are capable for a bigger score. We have to learn from this. They have to be ready in practice and is going to be higher expectations so that this doesn't happen again.”
“Most of all we just need to learn from this,” Aufiero said. “We need to get back in the gym and work on really getting after our routines and hitting them and building that confidence within us so that when we step out on the floor we know exactly how to hit and what to do.”
The Beavers opened the meet on the vault with three gymnasts posting career marks. Gardiner nailed her vault to score 9.90 matching her effort from Monday at Stanford when she first established the mark. Fellow sophomores Taylor Ricci and Megan Jimenez each tallied scores of 9.85 setting personal-bests as the vault team posted a team score of 49.275.
Moving to the bars OSU continued its momentum towards posting a big score particularly the back end of the lineup. Tang scored 9.875 followed by Kaytianna McMillan set a career-high with her a 9.90. Aufiero completed the Beavers' scoring on the bars with a career-best tying 9.925. In all OSU scored 49.225 on the apparatus and led the Huskies 98.500-98.050.
OSU's notched its third straight rotation of 49-plus points as the beam team scored 49.025. Tang led the scoring with a meet-high 9.90, while Katelyn Ohlrich and Gardiner each scored 9.80.
