Beavers Stumble at Quinnipiac
December 21, 2014 | Men's Basketball
Hamden, Conn. – Junior forward Olaf Schaftenaar scored a team-high 18 points and six rebounds but Oregon State fell 60-52 to Quinnipiac on Sunday at the TD Bank Sports Center, snapping a five-game winning streak.
Sophomore guard Malcolm Duvivier added 10 points and four assists for the Beavers (8-3) in their first-ever game in Connecticut. Junior center Daniel Gomis had seven points and seven rebounds and junior guard Langston Morris-Walker added seven points.
Schaftenaar was 7-for-10 from the field and was 4-of-6 from 3-point range. He has scored 37 points in his last two games, raising his average from 8.7 points per game to 10.6 ppg. He had a career-high 21 in a victory over DePaul on Dec. 18.
Quinnipiac (5-5) of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference outscored the Beavers 23-9 over the final 12 minutes of the first half to take a 32-26 lead and assume control of the game. The Beavers made several runs at the lead in the final 20 minutes but never got closer than three points.
“We didn't have the same spark, have the same killer instinct and the same selflessness” shown in their first 10 games, OSU coach Wayne Tinkle said. “It was very disheartening, we weren't together, we didn't have the same cohesion and energy.”
OSU trailed 53-46 with 6:01 remaining, but pulled within 53-50 with 2:44 to play on a basket by Victor Robbins. It had a chance to pull within one point but Duvivier missed a driving layup with 2:20 left and the Beavers went cold.
Quinnipiac scored on the ensuing possession to make it 55-50. OSU would not score again until Duvivier scored with 23 seconds to play to draw within 56-52. OSU was forced to foul and Zaid Hurst made four straight free throws in the final 17 seconds for the final score.
Hurst scored 20 first-half points, was 11-for-11 from the foul line, and finished with a game-high 24. Evan Conti added 14 points and six rebounds for the Bobcats, who are 22-5 in their last 27 home games and have advanced to postseason tournaments in four of the last five years.
The Beavers hit five 3-pointers in the first eight minutes and led 17-9 with 12 minutes remaining in the first half after a Duvivier dunk. But the Bobcats answered with a 13-0 run to zoom ahead 22-17 and they led 32-26 at halftime.
Junior guard Gary Payton II, OSU's leading scorer (13.6 rpg) and rebounder (9.4 rpg) did not score and had only one rebound before fouling out late. He played just 26 minutes.
"You can't single out one player; we are balanced and today we didn't have balance," Tinkle said. "Hurst got very physical with Gary and he got in foul trouble."
Quinnipiac has outrebounded 82 of its last 84 opponents and had a 46-27 edge on Sunday. It was only the third time this season OSU lost the battle of the boards.
“We didn't take on the challenge physically,” Tinkle said. “We knew it was going to be a battle on the glass. They got physical ad we cowered a little bit. We don't do that and we have to find a way to get back on track
“If we would have rebounded and finished plays … we weren't on page with the game plan. I will Quinnipiac credit, they are a good team. They got physical with us and we didn't respond.”
OSU was also outscored 15-4 at the foul line as the Bobcats had 19 attempts to OSU's seven.
“That shows our lack of aggression and we can't do that,” Tinkle said.
The Beavers host UC Santa Barbara at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 30 at Gill Coliseum in their next game. The game will be televised by Pac-12 Networks.
