Three pins and a win formula does the trick yet again as OSU uses the math to take down ASU for it's fourth straight home victory
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Three pins and a win is beginning to seem like a good formula for the No. 8/9/11 ranked Oregon State wrestling team as once again the Beavers used a trio of falls to claim victory. This time the Orange and Black made it eight straight wins, with a 42-4 decision over the Arizona Sun Devils, Saturday at Gill Coliseum.
OSU's three pins came courtesy of Drew Van Anrooy (133 lbs.), RJ Pena (157 lbs.) and Seth Thomas (165 lbs.) as the Beavers scored 37 unanswered points following ASU's lone major decision. With the win, Jim Zalesky's squad moved to 10-3 on the year and 5-1 in Pac-12 competition, while Arizona State lost its sixth in-a-row, falling to 7-11 overall and 2-2 in the conference.
Like the two meets before Saturday's, OSU used bonus points in the opening match to establish a path to victory. Senior Cody Weishoff scored five team points in the 174 lb. bout via his 17-1 technical fall over ASU's Rush Hall.
Following a Sun Devil major decision in the 184 lb. match, Oregon State added to their slim 5-4 lead without even sending a wrestler to the mat. 197 pounder Taylor Meeks accepted a forfeit to make it 11-4 Beavers, and then Chad Hanke won his 14th straight match, with a 3-1 decision in the heavyweight tilt to give his team a 10 point cushion at 14-4.
For the second straight day, 125 pound freshman Joey Palmer gave Beaver fans the most dramatic match of the meet. Friday vs. Cal Poly, Palmer pulled off an 8-6 sudden decision and Saturday he would triumph in similar fashion, claiming a 9-7 decision over the Devils' Dalton Miller in the waning seconds of the third period. After taking a 4-1 lead at the end of the first, Palmer gave up five points to make it 6-6 and was trailing 7-6 well into the third period, until a takedown with less than 10 seconds remaining gave him his fifth dual win of the year.
Once both teams came back onto the mats from the short TV intermission, Oregon State did not look back, reeling off 25 straight points to close out their regular season home dual slate on a high note. Amidst that 25 point stretch, the 'Beavs saw three pins, including two in-a-row from Pena and Thomas, following Van Anrooy's, which took place three matches prior.
Sandwiched in between the falls was a Mike Mangrum 15-8 decision as well as a 10-2 Scott Sakaguchi major decision to hand OSU its fourth straight home dual victory, after starting off 0-2 on the mats at Gill. Nearly
The Arizona State meet also marked the third straight one that OSU used the three pins and a win formula, applying that math to Cal Poly (Thomas, Mangrum, Sakaguchi) to win 50-0, as well as CSU Bakersfield (Meeks, Mangrum, Pena) to claim a 35-7 victory.
Nearly 1,000 fans were on hand to witness seniors Mangrum, Weishoff, and Hanke do battle in the final regular season home dual meet of their careers. The trio will have another opportunity thought to take the mats inside Gill as Oregon State will have more than a week to rest and prepare for National Duals, where it will host one of four regionals at the Coliseum.
The Beavers will welcome in national powerhouses Michigan, Virginia Tech and Oklahoma to Corvallis. Match-ups and meet times have yet to be announced but are expected to be revealed early next week from the NWCA.

POST MEET QUOTES
Head Coach Jim Zalesky
On his team's victory…
“The whole week we have just been going out and going after it. We have been trying to put up a lot of points on the scoreboard and I think we did that. We put 92 points up on the scoreboard as a team in two days and that's quite a few points."
On the Beavers' three pins and a win…
“It's what wrestling is all about and that's what fans love to see. The whole goal of wrestling is to get a pin and finishing up with RJ (Pena) and (Seth) Thomas getting two pins at the end was a great way to finish the meet.”
On Joey Palmer's match and performance this weekend…
“He had a lot of good scrambles and was over aggressive in one area and was kind of put on his back but he was able to come back and get the win. He had two big wins this weekend and earlier in the season he would lose those kinds of matches, so that just shows you the type of progress he's making.”
174 lb. Senior Cody Weishoff
On winning the final regular season home dual match of his career…
“It was pretty big, going out in the last home match of my career will be a big memory for me. This is something I will remember for the rest of my life.”
On his team's eight meet winning streak…
“We are starting to build momentum up and it's the right time of the year to do that. We are starting to peak for Pac-12 and Nationals, so we are doing better.”
125 lb. freshman Joey Palmer
On how he earned the final two points to claim an 8-6 decision in his bout…
“The last round he (Dalton Miller) got on my leg and I was just trying to scramble to get my two points. It was just transition wrestling, he gets on my leg and I got to something else. It is just scrambles, there is no certain move.”
On whether or not he realized how much time was left when he scored the takedown…
“No, I looked up and I saw that I had two points and there were two seconds left and I was like, 'sweet, the match is over!'
