TEMPE, Ariz. – The Oregon State softball team didn't generate much offense Sunday afternoon against San Jose State on Sunday afternoon in the final day of the Kajikawa Classic. Then, as it appeared as if the Beavers and Spartans were headed for extra innings, senior Lea Cavestany sent the Beavers back to Corvallis with one swing of the bat. She hit a 2-2 pitch deep to right center to give the Beavers a 1-0 win.
The Beavers managed only two hits prior to Cavestany's blast. Shortstop Elizabeth Santana singled and sophomore Dani Gilmore reached on a bunt hit. It was of no matter to senior pitcher Marina Demore as she hurled another complete-game shutout, her second of the season. She also has not allowed an earned run in any of her three starts, completing all three.
The Spartans did little on offense. They may have had six hits in their column but only threatened to score in the seventh. Demore didn't allow a walk and faced just two batters over the minimum. Only one out was made by SJSU in the air: a soft lineout right back to the pitcher.
The Beavers' infield enjoyed the busy day as they compiled 13 assists on groundouts. Catcher Ally Kutz threw out one runner and the Beavers turned a smooth 4-6-3 double play.
The Beavers return to action at the Louisville Slugger Classic in Las Vegas on Friday.
