Welshman Nets Hat Trick as Men's Soccer Wins 200th

CORVALLIS, Ore. – While the Oregon State men's soccer team's milestone of 200 wins in school history was expected to be reached sometime early in the 2012 season, there's no telling if UW-Green Bay was prepared for the offensive assault it faced from the Beavers in a 6-1 OSU win Friday night at Lorenz Field in the opening night of the Hensor/Zaher Nike Classic.
Ready or not, here they come.
Senior Emery Welshman drove the dump truck in the early going, registering the Beavers' first four shots. His first one was a goal, set up neatly by Roberto Farfan and Bjorn Sandberg in the second minute. In the fifth minute, a foul in the box gave Welshman an early opportunity to score his second of the game, but Green Bay keeper Ryan Wehking guessed correctly and made a diving save to his left to keep the score at 1-0.
“I think I put it in a good corner with some decent pace that on any given day could go in,” Welshman said.
Twenty minutes later, Wehking again robbed Welshman from in front. Welshman didn't hit the ball cleanly, causing Wehking to dive early to his right. With the ball sputtering his way, Wehking reached up with his left hand to corral the shot. Just 24 seconds later, though, senior Chris Harms set Welshman free as he blasted one by Wehking to make it 2-0. The score would stay that way for the half.
After Will Seymore made good on his own penalty kick in the 52nd minute, Welshman completed the hat trick eight minutes later. Freshman Mikhail Doholis drove in from deep on the right side and centered a pass that Welshman completed to make it 4-0. It's the first hat trick for OSU since Robby Christner against Howard in 2008.
“Emery finished well, but I guess he could have done better,” head coach Steve Simmons said of the additional scoring chances. “But at the same time, he's confident. I have to believe he's one of the most confident forwards in the country and it trickles to everyone else.”
Farfan picked up his second assist of the night with his helper on senior Alex Penny's third goal of the season. Penny took Farfan's lead pass and successfully waited for Wehking to commit first.
Welshman added an assist to complete his seven-point night on Glenn Paden's second goal in as many games. Welshman slow-played it on the end line to the left of Wehking then found Paden in front who one-timed it for a 6-0 advantage. Oregon State last scored four goals in the second half four years ago to the day, against UMKC on Sept. 21, 2008.
It nearly was Paden's second goal of the night. In the first half, Chase Raskowsky played a perfect service into the middle where Paden laid out and headed it home. Unfortunately, Paden was offside. It happened again later with Daniel Van Vleet being reigned in from a goal celebration by an official's flag. All in all, though, Simmons was pleased with the way his guys pushed the envelope.
“That's the aggressive nature of the team right now,” Simmons said. “When they train, they look to beat each other. That only raises the floor, and we start out at such a high level and can only go up from there.”
Green Bay (2-5-1) broke up the shutout in the 75th minute off a corner kick, but it couldn't dampen the Beavers' offensive fireworks show. Oregon State scored six goals for the second time this season. The last time the Beavers scored at least six goals in a game twice in one season was 2004. The Beavers now have scored 13 goals in their first three home games for the first time since 1990.
The Beavers look for win 201 in school history – and number five in 2012 – when they face UC Irvine at noon on Sunday. The Anteaters lost to Gonzaga, 2-1, this afternoon. Gonzaga will face UW-Green Bay at 9:00 a.m. Sunday at Lorenz Field prior to the Beavers' contest.
