EUGENE, Ore. - The Oregon State track and field team wrapped up the first day of competition at the 2012 Pac-12 Track and Field championships today, with Laura Carlyle of the 1,500 meters and the 4X100 men's relay team advancing to the finals.
The men of the Oregon State track and field team kicked things off with a bang today, competing in the 4X100 meter relay for just the second time this season. The team of Brandin Cooks, Malcolm Marable, Keynan Parker and Markus Wheaton finished in fourth place in their heat with a time of 40.84 to send them into tomorrow's finals.
Carlyle followed suit in the 1,500 meters when she ran a time of 4:23.56, placing fifth in the very competitive first heat of the event. She currently holds the 22nd best time in the country in the event, and her time today was good enough to send her to tomorrow's finals.
Emily LaValley impressed in the 800 meters with a big personal record of 2:10.71, but unfortunately didn't qualify for the finals. She beat her previous personal record by almost three seconds and is now ranked fourth all-time at OSU in the event.
Lacey London, a transfer from the University of Oregon, who although she didn't run track and Oregon, is familiar with Hayward Field, used it to her advantage when she also set a new personal record in the 800 meters in heat two of the event. She finished in fifth place with a time of 2:13.10, but was unable to make the finals.
"Overall we had a really good day," head coach Kelly Sullivan said. "We had Laura advance in the 1,500 and the guys advance in the 4X100 meter relay. We also had two freshman run really well in the 800 meters where they beat some really good competitors."
Taylor Nowlin competed in the 3,000 meter steeplechase against one of the most competitive fields in the competition. She finished in 15th place with a new personal record of 10:46.47.
"Taylor just got a huge personal record again," Sullivan said. "She is really close on the bubble to qualify for regionals and this is only the second race she has run in a year."
Obum Gwacham competed in the high jump and proved why he is one of the best athletes in the country. He currently holds the second best jump by a football player competing in track and field, and bested it today with a sixth place overall finish and a new season best 7-01.50 jump.
The Beavers will return to action tomorrow when the men of the relay team will kick things off with a 1:00 p.m. start for the finals of the 4X100 meter relay finals. Carlyle will compete in the finals of the 1,500 meters at 1:25 p.m, Kristin Oenning will make her appearance in the high jump at 1:40 p.m. and Kinsey Gomez, Erin Jones, Audrey Botti and Sandra Martinez will all run in the 5,000 meters at 3:40 p.m.
