CORVALLIS, Ore. – Ty Vinson earned a pin and Scott Sakaguchi, RJ Pena, Taylor Meeks and Chad Hanke all picked up wins but the 10th-ranked Oregon State wrestling team lost a 21-18 decision to No. 16 Michigan in front of 1,756 fans Friday night at Gill Coliseum.
The Beavers spotted Michigan a 10-0 lead as Pat Rollins lost 12-3 to Sean Boyle at 125, Drew Van Anrooy dropped a 3-1 decision to Rosario Bruno at 133 and Mike Mangrum was defeated, 10-8, at 141 to Camryn Jackson.
Oregon State, however, went on the offensive from that point on. Sakaguchi earned the Beavers' first individual win of the night, downing Eric Grajales, 9-6, at 149 pounds. Pena followed that up with an 8-2 win over Jacob Salazar at 157.
Two big Michigan wins, however, spread the lead to 21-6 in favor of the Wolverines after seven bouts. Taylor Massa picked up a technical fall over Alex Elder, 21-3, at 165, and was followed by Daniel Yates pinning Austin Morehead at 174. Yates won the bout in 2:54.
It was all Oregon State (0-1) from that point on. Vinson one upped Yates, pinning Jordan Thomas in just 1:25 in the 184-pound bout.
Taylor Meeks continued a strong start to his sophomore campaign at 197 when he picked up a 5-3 decision over Maxwell Huntley.
Chad Hanke, wrestling at Gill Coliseum for the first time since the then-Pac-10 Championships in 2011, was a 13-8 winner over Justin Dozier at heavyweight. That score, however, was too little to overcome Michigan's big lead early on and the Wolverines (3-1) held on the three-point victory.
The Beavers hit the road next weekend when taking on Boise State in Spokane, Wash., on Nov. 24.
