OSU scores going into the half but is unable to overcome two second half goals by the Bruins
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State women's soccer team hung tough with the third ranked team in the nation getting as close as one goal, but was unable to overcome two second half scores as UCLA defeated the Beavers 4-1 Sunday at Lorenz Field.
OSU scored their lone goal as the first half was drawing to a close, making it 2-1after 45-minutes of play. It would be two Bruin goals within a three minute stretch during the second half that would do in the Beavers, dropping their record to 9-4-1 on the year and 1-3-1 in Pac-12 play. With the win UCLA improved to 11-0-2 and 3-0-1 within the conference.
The third ranked Bruins made their presence inside Patrick Wayne Valley Stadium known early as they got on the board in just the third minute off of an unassisted goal by midfielder Zakiya Bywaters. Bywaters used some fancy footwork and put one past goalie Sammy Jo Prudhomme from close to 18-yards out for the early 1-0 lead.
Just three minutes later UCLA added to its lead with another unassisted goal, this time off the foot of Sarah Killion off of a free kick, which scooted past Prudhomme into the net for the quick 2-0 advantage.
The Beavers, undeterred from the early 0-2 hole they were in fought hard and cut that deficit in half as the first half was drawing to a close. With just 20 seconds remaining, senior midfielder Megan Miller took a pass from junior forward Jenna Richardson and swatted it into a net left empty by Bruin keeper Katelyn Rowland, who came out to try and clear the ball. The goal was Miller's fourth on the season and tied her for the team lead with Richardson. The score was suddenly 2-1 UCLA with just seconds remaining in the half and gave Linus Rhode's team new found momentum.
Coming out of halftime Oregon State looked to even up the score coming and had its chance in 56th minute when senior midfielder Justyne Freud fired a shot toward Rowland's direction, but the Bruin stopper made the save and preserved her team's slim lead.
UCLA ended putting its third and fourth scores up on the board in near consecutive fashion, sending balls into the net in the 57th and 60th minutes of play. The Bruins' second goal of the half was also Bywaters' second of the day and after the dust settled it was 4-1 UCLA with a little more than 30 minutes left to play.
Following the pair of scores, OSU tried to climb its way back into the match, sending seven of 12 total shots toward Rowland's direction. The Beavers were unable to get anything past the Bruin goal keeper though, who maintained her perfect record in the process.
Leading the way in the shots department for Oregon State was Richardson, Jacy Drobney and Erin Uchacz who each claimed three on the day. Other than Miller who scored her team's lone goal, the only other Beaver with a shot on goal was Drobney, who now has five on the season.
The Beavers now enter a lighter portion of their schedule as they will travel to Boulder next Saturday to take on the Colorado Buffaloes before returning home for their final two home matches of the season versus Arizona State and Arizona.
The Colorado match will be at 12pm, Sat. October 13 and will mark the first time all season Oregon State has played a contest outside of the Pacific Time Zone.
POST MATCH QUOTES
Head Coach Linus Rhode
On his team's performance…
“I was very pleased with the effort and commitment but I think what let us down were some errors that we made and they (UCLA) capitalized on. I talked to the team after the game and we have to eliminate unforced errors that result in goals.”
On his team's resiliency…
“They (UCLA) capitalized on some errors that we made, they also hit a fantastic free kick but given the hole that we dug for ourselves, we still kept pushing forward trying to score some goals. We came close a few times so we just have to stay positive and keep getting after it.”
Junior forward Jenna Richardson
On the defeat…
“We are building off of every game that we've had and even though we haven't received the results that we wanted, as a team our passion is coming back and we are fighting for each other. These are the four hardest games we are going to have throughout the season so the future is bright.”
Junior defender Morgan Kennedy
On her team's effort…
“In the first half it was really good that we got the goal back. Going into halftime losing 2-1 is much better than 2-0 and it gave us some hope. I think in the second half we had a few mental errors and gave the two goals (to UCLA), but it showed a lot about our character to keep going.”
On giving up the third goal and the first of the second half…
“It was a little dagger in the heart and was discouraging, especially when you know it came off our mistakes, so it was a little frustrating.”
POST MATCH NOTES
--Freshman goalie Sammy Jo Prudhomme made her third straight start of the season.
--Megan Miller continues to lead the Beavers in points, now with 13… Richardson trails by four with her nine
