CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State women's soccer team opened the Oregon State Nike Invitational on a good note notching seven goals against Florida International Friday night. Chelsea Buckland recorded her first hat trick in a Beaver uniform.
“Chelsea was on fire tonight,” Rhode said. “She has been struggling through injuries and trying to get her form back. Tonight she showed up and she was fantastic.”
Buckland started the Beavers off with a goal in the 23rd minute. After dribbling through the Panther defense, Buckland juked the keeper and found the back of the net to put the Beavers up 1-0. A few minutes later Jacy Drobney added to the score in the 27th minute with her second goal of the season.
The scoring didn't stop there, Buckland added another goal to her night in the 31st minute. After Florida International fouled a Beaver in the box Buckland was given the opportunity to take the penalty kick and sent it in for another goal to make it 3-0 to finish the first half.
In the second half, the Beavers did not let up as Brandi Dawson scored her first goal of the season after coming back from an injury. In the 57th minute, Justyne Freud sent a beautiful cross into the box and Dawson finished it off to make the score 4-0.
Jenna Richardson and Melinda Ingalls added to the scoreboard in the 68th and 81st minutes for their third and second goals of the season.
Buckland finished the Panthers off when she drilled her third goal of the night into the back of the net in the 88th minute to finish the game for the Beavers making the final score 7-0.
“Tonight scoring seven goals was great,” head coach Linus Rhode said. “We have been creating a lot of chances and it was great having seven goals going in, which doesn't happen very often. The girls played awesome tonight. I am happy for them because they have been working hard.”
The Oregon State Beavers will return to action Sunday Sept. 18 to take on the UC Davis Aggies at Paul Lorenz Field at 1:30 p.m.
