Tucson, Ariz. – The Oregon State women's soccer team defeated the Arizona Wildcats 1-0 Sunday in a tough fought battle between two Pac-12 opponents. The Beavers improved its record to 10-3-1 overall and 4-1 in conference play.
The Beavers had several opportunities in the first half with to score. One of the best opportunities came from Jenna Richardson in the 30th minute of the game, but she was stopped by the Wildcat goalkeeper.
Oregon State outshot the Wildcats 6-5 in the first half, but the score remained tied 0-0 going into halftime. Colleen Boyd came up with two saves in the first half to keep the score tied.
“We started off slow in the first half,” head coach Linus Rhode said. “Arizona came out and put a lot of pressure on us. We figured some things out and then we really started taking control of the match.”
It didn't take long for the Beavers to strike in the second half when Haley Shaw found Ashley Seal in the box in the 54th minute. The ball was built up from the midfield from Brandi Dawson, who played the ball into the 18-yard box to Shaw. Shaw found Seal and Seal finished it off into the bottom-left corner.
“Our back five have been awesome defensively and having our fullbacks coming forward and finishing some opportunities is a bonus,” Rhode said. “It is nice to have that option.”
Oregon State outshot Arizona 7-3 in the second half and was awarded four corners to their one.
The Beavers are now 4-1 in Pac-12 Conference play after coming away with two big wins this weekend against the Arizona schools. This is the second weekend in a row that the Beavers have been on the road.
Richardson's two goals against Arizona State this weekend puts her tied with Chelsea Buckland in goals with six each. Shaw is now first on the team in assists with five on the season.
“Haley has done great and she has really embraced her roll on the team,” Rhode said. “Every time that she comes on the field and plays, she is very affective. I can also say the same thing about Brandi Dawson.”
The Oregon State women's soccer team will return to action Friday Oct. 14 when they take on new Pac-12 member Utah at 6:00 p.m.
