CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State women's soccer team defeated the Washington Huskies today 4-1 in a convincing win against a Pac-12 foe. The Beavers are now 12-4-1 overall and the Huskies are 6-7-4 overall.
“It was great to get two wins this weekend,” head coach Linus Rhode said. “We suffered a disappointing loss last weekend against Utah and to bounce back and get two wins shows the character of our team.”
Oregon State notched its first goal of the game in the 15th minute. Jenna Richardson scored her seventh goal of the season when she got a rebound off the Washington goalkeeper and found the back of the net from 13-yards out.
Brittney Oljar scored her first goal of the season and the second for the Beavers in the 27th minute. Oljar's goal was similar to Richardson's. After a shot rebounded off the Washington goalkeeper, Oljar shot the ball past a defender to put the Beavers up 2-0.
“Oljar played outstanding today and she really did a lot of good things for us,” Rhode said. “I'm really happy for her to get her first goals of her career today.”
The Beavers outshot the Huskies 7-2 in the first half. The Oregon State back defensive line stayed strong during the first half with Colleen Boyd only having to make one save to keep the score 2-0 going into halftime.
Chelsea Buckland added to the score in the 51st minute when the Beavers were awarded a free kick from outside the 18-yard box. Buckland blasted a shot past the keeper to put Oregon State up 3-0 in the second half.
Washington got on the scoreboard in the 66th minute when the Huskies were awarded a free kick outside the 18-yard box on the sideline. The Huskies swung the ball into the box and a Washington forward got a head on it to make the score 3-1.
Oljar added to the Beavers score in the 80th minute to make the score 4-1. After Oljar was played into the box by a through ball from the Oregon State midfield, she slotted the ball right past the keeper for her second goal of the game.
“Today against the Huskies I feel like we played overall our best game for 90 minutes,” Rhode said. “We played some good soccer on both the offensive and defensive end. It was really fun to watch today.”
The Oregon State women's soccer team will return to action when they host No. 1 Stanford on Friday Oct. 28 at 7:00 p.m. at Paul Lorenz Field.
