LAS VEGAS - Colby Covington took third and Jason Lara fourth in their respective weight classes and the Oregon State wrestling team took 10th at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, which wrapped up competition Saturday at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
"Colby and Jason really came on today and battled in the consolation rounds," Oregon State head coach Jim Zalesky said. "This was a good finish with some of the best teams in the country. I'm proud of the way each of our guys wrestled and this will provide a good springboard toward the Nebraska dual next week."
Covington won all four bouts he competed in Saturday at the 174-pound class, and avenged a loss Friday to Oklahoma's Tyler Caldwell with a 6-2 decision victory to claim the third-place finish. Earlier in the day, he won three straight bouts to advance, defeating Hofstra's Ryan Patrovich (major decision 11-2), Purdue's Luke Manuel (decision 7-3) and Boise State's Jacob Swartz (decision 3-1).
Like Covington, Lara, at 125 pounds, had to fight through the consolation rounds Saturday to claim his fourth-place finish. Lara opened the day with a decision over Michigan's Sean Boyle, 8-3, then pinned Utah Valley's Ben Kjar in 4:10. Lara was then perfect against Ohio's State's Logan Stieber, 5-0.
Virginia Tech's Jarrod Garnett, however, proved to be too much for the OSU junior, winning by major decision, 12-3.
The Beavers tallied 66.5 points to place 10th, their best finish under Zalesky in Las Vegas. Cornell took the team title with 140 points, and OSU was one of three Pacific-10 Schools to finish in the top 10, joining No. 3 Boise State and No. 8 Cal State Bakersfield.
The Beavers finished 10th by advancing six wrestlers to Saturday's action. Clayton Jack was the only Beaver to advance to the semifinals, where he lost to Oklahoma's Nathan Fernandez via decision in overtime, 6-3. Jack defaulted on his next bout and placed sixth on the day.
Mike Mangrum (141 pounds), Scott Sakaguchi (149 pounds) and Chad Hanke (197 pounds) each advanced to Saturday as well, but dropped their only bouts of the day, knocking them out of their respective weight classes.
The Beavers will next be in action Saturday when Oregon State travels to Lincoln to face 15th-ranked Nebraska. The 13th-ranked Beavers and No. 15 Huskers start at 5 p.m. PT. Make sure and visit osubeavers.com for full results and a recap of the dual's action.
