Wrestling Competes At Day One Of Las Vegas Invitational

LAS VEGAS - Clayton Jack went 3-0 and finds himself in the semifinals of the heavyweight division at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, as the junior paced the Oregon State wrestling team on day one of the event, which was held Friday at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
All told, the Beavers have six wrestlers still alive entering the second and final day of the event, but it is Jack, who won via technical fall, fall and a decision, who has the opportunity to place first in his respective division.
Jack downed Cal Baptist's Alexander Evers via technical fall to start, then defeated David Devine of SIU-Edwardsville via fall in 2:54 to advance to the quarterfinals. Once there, he defeated fellow Pacific-10 Conference foe Atticus Disney, of Cal Poly, to advance to the semifinals Saturday morning.
He will square off against Oklahoma's Nathan Fernandez in the semifinals, and with a win, would face either Jarod Trice (Central Michigan) or Ben Apland (Michigan) in the finals.
The Beavers had a good first-day showing, placing 12th with 41.5 points, placing third amongst Pac-10 teams at the event. Nine of the 10 wrestlers who entered in the Las Vegas Invitational won at least one bout, and five Beavers, including Jack, went 2-0 to start.
Jason Lara (125 pounds) advanced to Saturday by posting a major decision over Brown's Billy Watterson, then downing Pac-10 foe Andre Gonzalez, of Cal State Fullerton, 9-2, in a decision. Lara, however, was defeated by Arizona State's Anthony Robles via technical fall, 16-0, in the quarterfinals.
Mike Mangrum (141 pounds) also started off 2-0, first with a fall of Harvard's Joseph Alie in 4:23 and a 7-2 decision over Central Michigan's Scott Mattingly. But Mangrum, like Lara, lost a 6-2 decision to James Kennedy of Illinois in the quarterfinals.
Scott Sakaguchi (149 pounds) defeated Brown's Philip Marano (decision, 7-2) and Cal State Bakersfield's John Cardenas (decision, 4-0) but lost in the quarterfinals in a tightly-contested bout, 6-4 to Boise State's Jason Chamberlain.
Colby Covington (174) is the final of five Beavers to go 2-0, advancing to the quarterfinals with a pin of North Dakota State's MacKain Stoll (1:32) and a 4-1 decision over Arizona State's Eric Starks. But Covington was downed by Oklahoma's Tyler Caldwell, 6-0.
Chad Hanke also advances to Saturday's competition, going 3-1 Friday. He won his first bout before losing in the second round, and winning two straight to stay alive.
Other Oregon State wrestlers Friday include Kelly Kubec, who went 2-2 at 133 pounds, Jon Brascetta who tallied a 2-2 record at 165 pounds, Brice Arand, who went 1-2 at 184 and Alex Elder, who was 0-2 at 157 pounds.
