PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - The No. 24 Oregon State softball team dropped a pair of games in Friday's opening round action of the Palm Springs Classic at Big League Dreams. The Beavers (13-6) dropped their first game to Coastal Carolina, 2-1, before Boston College defeated OSU 4-2 to end the day.
The first game seemed to be a promising one as Mia Longfellow, who singled to get on base, came in to score Oregon State's first run on an RBI single by Vanessa Iapala in the top of the first inning. However, the Chanticleers held the Beavers scoreless for the remainder of the game. Monica Hoffman's efforts of striking out 10 Coastal Carolina batters wasn't enough to stop the Chanticleers as they came back to score both their runs in the third inning.
Hoffman, who threw a four-hitter, dropped to 7-4, while Christina Doyle improved to 3-0 with a four-hitter of her own.
Longfellow finished the game going 2-for-2 with the lone run scored. Iapala and Ingrid Lochelt had the only other hits, each going 1-for-3.
In game two, OSU also scored a run in the first, but Boston College came out of the chute explosively, scoring all four of its runs in the first as well. Brianne McGowan relieved Ta'Tyana McElroy in the first inning and held the Eagles scoreless for the remainder of the game, with the rookie throwing a three-hitter with three strikeouts in nearly six innings of work.
Oregon State tried to make a comeback by scoring again in the third, but its efforts just weren't enough. Alana Mendoza scored both of OSU's runs. Sherina Galvin, Kelly Petersen, Longfellow, and Mendoza each had a hit in the contest.
OSU will face Bethune-Cookman at 3 p.m. and will follow that game at 5:30 against No. 6 Georgia on Saturday. The Palm Springs Classic continues through Sunday.
