CORVALLIS, Ore. - Stephanie Lucas had a goal and an assist as Oregon State beat Portland State 2-1 in non-league women's soccer Tuesday afternoon at Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium. OSU (6-4-0 overall, 0-0-0 Pacific-10) also got a goal from Morgan Crabtree as it won its second straight game.
The Beavers will play host to 21st-ranked Florida State on Friday at 4:30 p.m. The starting time for that game has been moved up 30 minutes from previously announced schedules.
On Tuesday, OSU took a 2-0 lead in the 32nd minute and then couldn't find the net again despite finishing the day with a 36-6 edge in shots. The Vikings (0-11-0, 0-2-0 Big Sky) picked up a goal by Erica Mays in the 74th minute but were unable to even the score.
"Everybody got the opportunity to play, and it allowed us to see who can contribute for us and who can't," OSU head coach Steve Fennah said. "Obviously, it wasn't a good enough performance. We did score a couple of nice goals and we did get plenty of scoring opportunities, but our intensity has got to be way high."
Oregon State jumped in front 1-0 in the 29th minute when Lucas crossed the ball from the left side into the center of the field, and Crabtree drove the ball to the upper far post from about 20 yards out. In the 32nd minute, Lucas was on the receiving end of a pass from Courtney Carter at midfield, on a breakaway, she dribbled in and put the ball away for a 2-0 lead.
PSU increased its percentage of play in the second half, eventually scoring in the 74th minute. In a scramble, Tara Bannion directed the ball to the center of the field and Mays socked it into the upper right corner from the top of the penalty area.
"We made some changes in the second half, and the quality of the game dropped off," Fennah said of OSU's performance. "And I think a major factor was that from the first whistle (of the afternoon), we didn't come out with the proper focus and approach this game the way we needed to. It was almost like we came out thinking the game would be easy."
Jerika Duran went the first 52 minutes in the OSU net and didn't allow a goal before giving way to Elizabeth Pease, both posted two saves. PSU goalkeepers Lori Scheider and Mariah Farley combined to make 14 saves as 16 of OSU's 36 shots were on goal.
