No. 12 Women's Crew Misses Out On Semifinal Round At NCAAs

CAMDEN, N.J. - The 12th-ranked Oregon State women's crew narrowly missed out on reaching the semifinals at the NCAA Championships in their races Friday on the Cooper River course, as they finished fifth in the afternoon repechage (second-chance race) and will race in the third-level final Saturday morning.
Only the top-two crews in each of the three morning heats directly qualified for the semifinals, while the remaining teams raced in the repechages to try and qualify.
"I think we did a lot better this afternoon," OSU coach Charlie Owen said. "It's tough coming back after not racing well in the morning. We showed confidence and competed well."
The Beavers finished fourth in the morning heat with a time of 6:39.89, then drew a tough field for their repechage, as their time of 6:32.3 placed them fifth in their heat, but would have placed them third in the other repechage. OSU's 6:32.3 was .02 off of second-place Syracuse's 6:32.1 in the second repechage.
"We were behind after the first 700 meters," Owen said. "We rowed strong and made a move, but it just wasn't enough to get into third place."
The varsity eight, which won the third-level final last year to finish 13th overall, will race at 11:20 EDT Saturday morning.
Virginia, Michigan, Washington, Princeton, Brown, and California all qualified for the semifinals after their opening heats, while Boston, Michigan State, Northeastern, Harvard, Syracuse, and Ohio State all qualified with top-three finishes in the repechages.
