CORVALLIS, Ore. - Tarrah Beyster hit her 50th career home run and earned both wins as the No. 12 Oregon State softball team swept a Civil War doubleheader with No. 17 Oregon at Ropes-Fetrow Field on Tuesday.
The Beavers (36-14-1, 6-8 Pacific-10) posted a 2-1 win in the opener and came away with a 3-1 victory in the nightcap.
"We did a better job of hitting with runners on base today and were able to manufacture some runs," said coach Kirk Walker. "Defensively, we hoped to be very consistent. We've got a strong defense and were able to focus on one batter at a time."
Beyster threw a three-hitter with seven strikeouts despite walking three runners in the first two innings of game one. She then relieved Crystal Draper in the fourth inning of game two and went on to earn her second win of the day. Beyster improved to 24-9 on the year with the two wins.
"Tarrah was throwing well from the get-go, even with those early walks," Walker said "We haven't really played a lot of doubleheaders this year, and she was in pretty good shape for that today."
Offensively, the senior was 2-for-4 with two walks for the afternoon. She was 0-for-2 in the opening game, but came back strong in the nightcap with a 2-for-2 performance. She singled in the first inning before hitting a solo shot over the right field fence in the third inning for her 14th home run this season and 50th for her career.
Brynnen Guthrie also aided in the sweep with a 3-for-6 performance at the plate in the two games. The rookie was 2-for-3 with an RBI in game one, and she was 1-for-3 and scored a run in the second game.
Cara Maxey also had a 2-for-3 performance in the second game but did not bat in game one.
Oregon (33-22, 5-10 Pac-10) had chances to score but could not capitalize. The Ducks left 11 runners on in the second game after stranding sixth in game one. Draper walked two batters and hit another in the first inning of the nightcap to load the bases, but she struck out Triawn Custer to get the Beavers out of the jam. UO left two runners on base three other times in the game.
Missy Coe hit a home run for UO's only run in the second game, while Jill Robinson's RBI single scored Alyssa Laux in the first game.
With the sweep, the Beavers jumped from seventh place into fifth place in the league standings, moving ahead of Oregon and Stanford.
