LOS ANGELES - Tarrah Beyster went 2-for-3 for Oregon State, but No. 3 UCLA capitalized on strong offense and a couple OSU mistakes as the Bruins upended the Beavers, 6-1, in Pacific-10 softball action at Easton Stadium on Friday.
The No. 13 Beavers (36-17-1, 6-12 Pac-10) started the game strong, scoring a run on two hits in the top of the first inning. Shawna Feldt led off the game with a single, went to second on Brynnen Guthrie's grounder and later scored on Beyster's RBI single.
But UCLA came back strong, with Amanda Freed tripling to lead off the bottom half of the inning. Natasha Watley singled and stole second, and then Julie Adams reached on an error by Guthrie that sent the first Bruin run across the plate. In all, UCLA finished the first inning with four runs on four hits and one error.
The Bruins (37-11-1, 12-7 Pac-10) added two more runs on two hits and two walks in the second inning.
"We came out strong on offense and swung the bat well, but we did not come out on defense in the first two innings," said coach Kirk Walker. "We gave them too many opportunities. They ended up scoring four runs in the first inning, when it probably realistically should have been one, maybe two."
Beyster held the Bruins to just four hits for the rest of the game, but the Beavers could not salvage a comeback. OSU threatened in the fourth inning, when Beyster led off with her second single of the day. Jessica King pinch ran for Beyster, and Steph Adams reached on an error to put runners at first and second with one out. The runners each advanced a base when Shannon Sorg fouled out to right field, but pinch hitter Traci Feldt grounded out to first base to end the inning.
"We opened up the door for them defensively and that was disappointing," Walker said. "After (the first two innings), Tarrah settled down and did a nice job late in the game. Unfortunately we got ourselves in too deep of a hole to get out of after the first two innings."
Beyster dropped to 24-12 with the loss after giving up 10 hits and four walks to go along with two strikeouts. Three of the six runs were earned.
Freed picked up her 20th win of the year with the victory. She held the Beavers to four hits, with two walks and four strikeouts.
