CORVALLIS, Ore. - Steph Adams hit her fifth home run of the year to lead the No. 12 Oregon State softball team to a 5-1 victory over Southern Utah in OSU's rain-shortened home opener. The game was called after the sixth inning on account of the weather.
Adams scored twice and went 2-for-3 in the winning effort. She also added her team-leading 10th double of the year. Both of Adams' hits came with two outs, and OSU scored four of its five runs in two-out situations as well.
"We just kept pushing. With two outs, things started happening, and that shows a lot of heart," said assistant coach Heather Chinn-Smith. "That's been one of the biggest things for us this year. We never die. We have that punch and can come back."
OSU (26-6-1) also got two hits apiece from Traci and Shawna Feldt. Traci went 2-for-3 and scored twice, once on an RBI double from her sister, who finished 2-for-4 on the day. The Beavers also got an RBI double from Jenni Jodoin.
Tarrah Beyster improved to 16-5 with the complete game victory. She gave up just one hit, but it was a solo home run by Joni Bardsley in the first inning. Beyster walked just one batter and struck out eight.
Lori Shephard dropped to 2-10 with the loss, giving up three runs and six hits in 2.2 innings of work for Southern Utah (3-24). Renee Hietbrink came in on relief in the third inning and allowed five hits.
The Beavers open Pac-10 play at Arizona State at 5 p.m. PST on Friday, March 31.
