Beaver Wrestlers Fall to ASU, 23-16

Tempe, Ariz. - - Oregon State, ranked 22nd nationally, lost a dual match to No.13 Arizona State on Sunday in Pacific-10 wrestling in Tempe. OSU's two nationally-ranked wrestlers, 157-pounder Eric Jorgensen and heavyweight Jason Cooley, won their matches to continue their respective winning streaks.
Oregon State (9-5 overall, 5-2 Pacific-10) had won seven straight dual meets before running into the Sun Devils (9-7, 3-0). Jorgensen, ranked fourth in the nation by Amateur Wrestling News, has now won 24 matches in a row to extend his record to 24-1 on the season after an 18-4 major decision. Cooley, ranked ninth, now stands at 19-5 after a 3-2 decision, and is riding an eight-match winning streak as the Beavers will head to Provo, Utah to take on Brigham Young University next Saturday, Feb. 12 for a dual meet at 6 p.m.
In the 133-pound match, Freshman Mike Delaney pinned ASU's Arturo Anaya in two minutes, 24 seconds. Delaney improved his record to 5-4 on the season and now has three pins. 174-pounder Nathan Coy was the only other Beaver to win his match Sunday, as he decisioned ASU's Curtis Owen 12-7.
Nathan Navarro, ranked third in the Pac-10, lost a close contest to eighth-ranked Michael Kawamura in the 125-pound class with a 6-2 decision.
After being ranked third in the Pac-10 in the 197-pound class, Clint Wilson moved to the 184-pound class this week and was defeated in a tough 5-4 match by ASU's Will Cleve. 141-pounder Shane Cunanan saw his six-match winning streak halted with a 9-4 loss to David Douglass.
Before going to Provo next Saturday with his teammates, Jorgensen will travel to East Lansing, Michigan for the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star Classic. Monday's match will pit Jorgensen against Nebraska's Brian Snyder, who is ranked third in the country.
