LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Four different Beavers homered as the No. 12 Oregon State softball team defeated Penn State and No. 8 California to win the Troy Cox Classic on Sunday.
Jenni Jodoin and Steph Adams each hit home runs to lead the Beavers (13-4-1)to a 4-1 victory over Penn State in the semifinals, and Tarrah Beyster and Parisa Plant homered in a 6-5 win over Cal in the championship game. It was the first loss of the season for Cal (19-1).
"The team had a really good day. The small things that we did we wrong, we corrected and they didn't affect us," said coach Kirk Walker. "Everyone on the team contributed at some point during the tournament."
Beyster was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament for the second year in a row, while Adams also received recognition on the All-Tournament Team.
Jodoin went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI in the win over Penn State, and she also went 2-for-3 in the win over Cal. Shawna Feldt was a combined 5-for-8 with two runs and an RBI in the two games on Sunday, while Beyster and Plant each had two RBI in the championship game.
Beyster pitched the complete game against Penn State, allowing just five hits to improve to 7-4 on the year. She also earned the save in the win over Cal, entering the game with two runners on and no outs in the sixth inning. She relieved starter Crystal Draper, who improved to 6-0 on the season with the win over Cal.
"Tarrah pitched a great game this morning (against Penn State), and she really stepped it up another level in relief in the championship game," Walker said. "Crystal really shut down Cal's big hitters in the first half of the game. Cal has a very good team, and we match up to them well. Both teams swing the bat very well, have good pitchers and play solid defense."
