CORVALLIS, Ore. - - Oregon State (10-7 overall, 6-3 Pac-10) defeated the rival Oregon Ducks (11-6, 6-4) 27-12 Friday night after winning seven of 10 matches. OSU's Ben Richards pinned Oregon's Adam Marino, while fourth-ranked Eric Jorgensen and No. 10 Jason Cooley won their matches as well.
OSU's Nathan Navarro led off the meet at 125 pounds with a 10-3 decision over Jason Harless, as the Beavers won four of their first five matches. Shane Cunanan, Nathan Coy, and Jason Lovell each won their matches as well.
"This is a young squad that has improved dramatically," said OSU head coach Joe Wells. "We saw more of the wrestling we need to see for the Conference Championships coming up."
Senior Clint Wilson lost a hard-fought match to Oregon's seventh-ranked Doug Lee in the 184-pound match. The senior now has a 9-9 record with three pins on the season.
Jorgensen, now 26-3, shutout Derek Smith, winning 13-0 in a match that put the Beavers ahead 16-4 with five matches remaining.
"Jorgensen started a little slowly, but then he came out and fought back," said Wells.
Cooley improved his record to 21-6 with a 17-3 major decision over Eric Webb in the heavyweight match, while Cunanan moved to 12-13 on the year.
"He's managing his matches well," Wells said of Cunanan. "He wrestled a good match and is getting better and better."
Oregon State seemed to be in control of the match the entire way. "We dictated the flow of the matches. Even the ones we didn't win, we dictated the pace of the match," said Wells. "It was nice to get a sweep of Oregon this season."
The Beavers wrestle at the Pacific-10 Championships Feb. 26-27 in Davis, Calif.
