CORVALLIS, Ore. - Katie Henderson's penalty-kick goal in the 87th minute lifted Oregon State to a 3-2 win over Idaho in non-league women's soccer Friday afternoon at Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium. The Beavers (4-2-1 overall) now take a two-game winning streak into Sunday's 2 p.m. home game against Sacramento State.
"We made hard work of that," said OSU head coach Steve Fennah, who saw his team lose a two-goal lead before coming back for the victory. "After the game, we talked about the focus we need. We weren't under pressure for a large part of the game, but we need to keep our focus intact for the entire game.
"That said, it was to our players' tremendous credit that once they were in that situation, they were able to go and win the game."
The Beavers led Friday's contest 2-0 well into the second half, but Idaho (4-1-1) used penalty kicks from Jennifer Frazier in the 76th minute and Megan Cummings in the 83rd minute to tie the game. Cummings' kick came after OSU's Allison Hamada was called for a handball in the box, that meant a red card and an ejection for Hamada, so the Beavers would have just 10 players on the field for the duration of the game.
Fennah thought about having the Beavers fall back, play a defensive game and reorganize, but decided against it.
"I felt we could still win it," Fennah said. "I still had the confidence they could do that, because once you're in that (tie-game) situation, you get your focus back."
OSU began attacking, and in the 87th minute BreeAnna Jolin had a breakaway opportunity but was pulled down just inside the top of the Vandal box before she could shoot. Katie Henderson stepped in to take the penalty kick for Oregon State.
"At Portland (in the season-opener), she stepped right up and took the penalty kick we had there," Fennah said of the freshman. "So she's our penalty-taker. She's got the confidence you have to have to do that, and she's done a nice job."
Said Henderson: "You just try to approach it as the keeper is as nervous as the shooter, and you use that for what it's worth. Confidence is what you need more than anything. I was just focused on the corner I was trying to hit it to and aimed for that corner."
Henderson kept the ball low and sent it just inside the right post, Idaho goalkeeper Tricia Haynes guessed wrong and broke the opposite way. The ball easily found the back of the net.
Oregon State had opened the scoring in the 26th minute when Dante Lipfert got possession in midfield, dribbled all the way to the left corner of the eight-yard box and shot back to the right to make it 1-0. The Beavers added their second goal in the 59th minute off a corner kick, as Leila Kaady lobbed the ball in from the right flag to the far post and Whitney Horn headed it back into the center of the net.
