Early Goal Doesn't Hold Up For OSU

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State scored in just the game's second minute but Stanford came back to take a 3-1 win in MPSF Mountain Division men's soccer Friday afternoon at Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium. OSU (4-9-0 overall, 0-3-0 MPSF Mountain) plays host to No. 17 California on Sunday at 1 p.m.
OSU jumped in front of Stanford (9-2-2, 4-0-1) early in Friday's game on Alex Close's first career goal. Greg Howes played a ball down the left side to Ben Roth, who took it into the box and tapped it to the right past Cardinal goalkeeper Adam Zapala, and Close gathered it in and tucked it inside the near post.
Howes' assist was the 12th of his Oregon State career, moving him into a tie for third place among the Beavers' all-time leaders. The record is shared by Chris Scotti (1989-92) and Fredrik Kummernes (1995-98) with 16 each.
Stanford evened the score late in the first half on a goal by Todd Dunivant in the 43rd minute. Brandon Garinger passed the ball left to Dunivant, who beat OSU keeper Bryan Hill with a shot to the far post.
"We still haven't learned that because we give up a goal, or we're down a goal and there's a lot of time on the clock, that we've got to keep the ball on the ground and keep moving," OSU head coach Dana Taylor said. "We panicked at times, the ball wasn't on the turf, the game breaks down and that benefits the other team."
Stanford took the lead in the 57th minute as T.K. Inbody scored on a penalty kick after an OSU foul in the box. Inbody then assisted on a goal by Corey Woolfolk in the 60th minute, passing to Woolfolk at the top of the 6-yard box and Woolfolk spun and volleyed it home for a 3-1 lead.
Taylor did see good things from the seven freshmen OSU used in the game.
"Even though Ryan Foster was responsible for the penalty kick, he had a tremendous game," Taylor said. "He stepped up and gave us the shape and work rate in the back to let us go forward. Ryan Smith in the defensive midfield was playing with a groin injury but showed a tremendous work rate, kept the ball moving and was a defensive presence. When Alex Close was in the game, he was spectacular. But he got kicked in the shin (in the 79th minute) and was done for the game."
OSU was also without two players who received red cards in last Sunday's 4-3 loss at Air Force: Scott Tedder and Jerod Fitzgerald.
