DENVER, Colo. - Oregon State had the early lead but allowing a pair of second-half goals cost the Beavers a 2-1 loss to Denver as OSU opened play in MPSF Mountain Division men's soccer. The Beavers (4-7-0 overall, 0-1-0 MPSF Mountain) will play at Air Force on Sunday at noon PDT.
Against Denver (5-8, 2-1-0), OSU was outshot 23-10 but "our opportunities were better," Oregon State head coach Dana Taylor said. "We just didn't finish them. We didn't look sharp as a team today, we gave away a lot of the midfield play. We were very tentative."
Oregon State jumped in front in the 15th minute when Scott Tedder scored off an assist from Greg Howes. Howes turned a player about 20 yards out from the goal and then slotted it to Tedder on the left side, and Tedder tucked it inside the near post for a 1-0 lead.
The assist was the 11th of Howes' career, moving him into a tie for fourth place on OSU's career leaders list.
Oregon State defensive breakdowns played a part in both Denver goals, Taylor said. The Pioneers made it 1-1 in the 68th minute, then went in front in the 86th minute and the Beavers couldn't get the equalizer in the final 4 1/2 minutes.
Taylor praised the play of Tedder and goalkeeper Bryan Hill, who recorded six saves for OSU.
