Cross Country and Track Inks Four for 2011-12 Season
Feb. 21, 2011
CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State University women's track and cross country team has received four National Letters of Intent for the 2011-2012 seasons as announced by head coach Kelly Sullivan.
Making up the 2011 Oregon State cross country and track recruiting class is Latane Cox (Lake Oswego, Ore.), Kinsey Gomez (Coeur D'Alene, Idaho), Aly Neilson (Colleyville Heritage, Texas) and Kelsi Schaer (Tigard Ore.).
"We're excited. Four outstanding young ladies, great students, coming from outstanding programs," Sullivan said. "I feel like we've hit a home run with this group. I have to give assistant coach Adam Tribble a ton of credit. Adam's the one who recruited Allie Neilson, Kinsey Gomez and Kelsi Schaer. Assistant coach Travis Floeck was involved in recruiting Latane Cox."
Cox who attends Lakeridge High School in Lake Oswego, Ore. ran a personal best for 5,000-meters cross country with a time of 18:33 at the Concordia Puma Classic and finished second at the Three Rivers League cross country meet in the fall of 2010. She was on the honor roll all four years of high school and apart of the National Honors Society.
Gomez was recently named the Gatorade Idaho Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year for the second consecutive year. She captured the 5A cross country state title representing Coeur D'Alene High School last fall for a second straight year and the third time in the past four seasons. She took 11th at the Footlocker West Regional Championships as a junior. She also won a state title in the 3,200 and 1,600 last spring, won a Junior Olympics national title in the 3,000 last summer, and was second in the 1,500.
Neilson finished second in the 2008 Texas 5A cross country state meet and was fourth in 2009 representing Colleyville Heritage High School. She finished second in Texas outdoor track in 2008 in the 3,200 and finished seventh in the 1,600 that same year. She finished 10th at the Nike Cross Nationals in 2008.
Schaer comes to Oregon State from Tigard and placed third at cross country districts and 11th at the state meet in 2010. In 2008 she won the district title in the 400 meter outdoor track event while also placing second in the 800m.
"This is as good a class as we've had," Sullivan said. "A couple years ago when we signed Casey Masterson, Jen Macias, Marsha Lampi, Hannah Soza-Hodgkinson and Abby Chesimet, when they all came in that was a class that's made a big difference with this program. We feel like this group is kind of in the same mold coming in."
