Masteron Breaks School Record In Mile
Feb. 14, 2009
SEATTLE, Wash. – Freshman Casey Masterson (Eugene, Ore.) broke the all-time Oregon State women’s track school record in the indoor mile at the Husky Classic on Saturday to lead the Beavers.
Masterson won her mile section with a time of 4:51.87, breaking the previous school record by more than five seconds at University of Washington’s Dempsey Indoor.
“Casey ran a very smart indoor race today,” head coach Kelly Sullivan said. “From start to finish she had a good demeanor and ran a very good race.”
Sophomore Abby Chesimet (Astoria, Ore.) also had a very strong showing earning the school’s second best indoor 3,000-meters time of 10:02.17, a personal best. Chesimet finished 11th in her section.
“Abby and Casey both ran as well as we could have hoped,” Sullivan said. “It was a really good PR for Abby. Her time today was faster than she has run in some outdoor meets,” Sullivan said. “We are very pleased with those two and I know both of them are happy with how they performed.”
Also in competition was sophomore Jackie Brown (Beaverton, Ore.) taking fifth in her 800-meters section with a time of 2:23.13 good enough for sixth all-time at Oregon State and a personal best.
Sophomore Hannah Soza-Hodgkinson (Forest Ranch, Calif.) rounded out the Beavers’ small group with a 16th place finish in her 3,000-meters section with a time of 10:36.95.
Oregon State women’s track is back in action March 7 with the team splitting two directions. One group will attend the UW Last Chance meet in Seattle, Wash. and the rest will head to McMinnville, Ore. for the Linfield Icebreaker.
