Meet Jen Macias
Feb. 12, 2010
Jen Macias has been a great asset to the Oregon State Women's Cross Country and track team since her arrival in Corvallis. As a sophomore and junior she has earned cross country Pac-10 All-Academic Honorable Mention. This season she emerged early as the top runner and she finished in the team's top four at both the Pac-10 Championships and NCAA West Regional.
What is your favorite thing about OSU?
"My favorite thing about OSU is how everyone is really friendly and it's just such a welcoming place. It's close to home too. In the beginning I was looking at other schools too that were far away but my parents didn't like that and [Oregon State] gave me a good opportunity, so I came here."
What's your favorite song to listen to when you run?
"There's so many of them. Right now I don't really listen to anything but in the past it was 'Give It All' by Rise Against. If you listen to the lyrics you'll understand why."
What's the best part about being a college athlete?
"The best part about being a college athlete is that people look up to you. Once they find out you're an athlete they ask you how you do it, or how you manage it; getting to meet other athletes too. Compared to other schools that I've heard of, ours is really friendly. The athletic atmosphere is really good, most of us aren't cocky or stuck up about it and that's what I really like."
What do you hope to do after college?
"After college I want to be a bilingual elementary school teacher; I'm minoring in Spanish. Also I'd like to be a cross country and track coach and hopefully have a family and keep running of course."
If you could drive any car what would it be?
"I'm not a huge car person but I kind of like BMW's, maybe a convertible. That would be nice."
If you had to pick any other sport to participate in what would it be?
"If I were a boy it would be wrestling because I really like wrestling. I did stats for them all four years in high school and went to all the meets. If not, gymnastics would be a really cool sport to do. It takes so much, every part of your body, and I think it'd be cool to be able to do that."
What's a common misconception about you?
"Some people tend to think I'm shy but I'm not. I'm really outgoing and I like to talk to everyone."
What are your goals for next season?
"For track this season, my goal would be to get a lot of PR's and try all the events and see what I can do to help our team."
What has been your favorite class at OSU?
"It's been a TCE class with (Mike) O'Malley and also an HDFS class with Rick Settersten, I really liked his class."
What food is your "guilty pleasure"?
"I think ice-cream. I went to Cold Stone yesterday and got some."
What, so far, has been your best memory at OSU?
"I have a lot of good memories. Getting my PR last year while being sick; it means that I could do better in cross country without being sick, so that's something I look forward to. Also, the USC game was a pretty good memory and just being out on the field. I have a lot of really good memories!"
