Track Opens Outdoor Season at Icebreaker
March 6, 2010
SEATTLE, Wash. - The Oregon State women's track team completed its indoor track season in Seattle, Wash. at the UW Last Chance Qualifier and started its outdoor at the Linfield Erik Anderson Memorial Icebreaker Invitational in McMinnville, Ore. Saturday.
"Today went really well," women's track head coach Kelly Sullivan said following the meet. "We came out of the meet feeling really good about how everyone competed."
Laura Carlyle (Kelowna, British Columbia) and Abby Chesimet (Astoria, Ore.) traveled to the UW Last Chance Qualifier in the hopes of posting qualifying times for the mile run good enough to advance to the NCAA Indoor Track Championships next week in Fayetteville, Ark.
Carlyle, who set the Oregon State record in the mile Feb. 13 at the Husky Classic with a time of 4:50.90 finished Saturday's race in ninth place with a time of 4:54.79. Chesimet finished right behind her in 10th place with a time of 4:57.87. Both times fell short by just a couple of seconds of a provisional qualifier for the NCAA championship.
"Abby was much faster than she was the last two times out," Sullivan said. "Lauren was a little disappointed with her time but she's been battling a foot injury but she did well too."
Another group of the women's track team competed Friday night and Saturday morning at the Linfield Erik Anderson Memorial Icebreaker Invitational in the 10,000 and the 1,500-meter races.
"We got done what we wanted to," women's track assistant coach Adam Tribble said following competition Saturday. "Get got out there and got the rust off. We used this weekend as a low key workout. All-in-all, we needed an opening meet for the spring outdoor season, and this event served its purpose."
Redshirt freshman Olivia Poblacion finished third overall in the 1,500-meter at the Icebreaker with a time of 4:51.21. Freshman Sandra Martinez finished the long 10,000-meter race second overall with a time of 37:11.20.
The next outdoor meet for the women's track team is the Oregon Preview March 20 in Eugene, Ore.
