Carlyle Leads Runners with Second Best School Record Mile Time
Jan. 30, 2010
Seattle, Wash. – Redshirt sophomore Laura Carlyle (Kelowna, British Columbia) ran the second fastest indoor mile in school history, finishing in 4:55.95 at the Washington Invitational to lead the Beavers on Saturday afternoon.
Carlyle, racing in the second heat of the timed finals, nearly won the section coming up short by only two-hundreths of a second to Madeline Meyers, competing unattached. Carlyle finished 12th overall out of 42 competitors logged in to compete.
“We had a good start with this group,” head coach Kelly Sullivan said. “Laura Carlyle highlighted the day with a near win in the mile with a personal record. Abby Chesimet also ran an indoor mile personal record. Hannah Soza-Hodgkinson ran really well in the 3,000 meters, running right at her personal best, while Regina Lopez ran a 24-second personal record, set in high school. And Taylor Nowlin ran a three-second PR from high school. So overall we were very pleased.”
Rounding out the 37 runners in the finals included junior Abby Chesimet (Astoria, Ore.), finishing 20th in 5:02.14, junior Ashley Berry (Medford, Ore.) placing 30th in 5:16.75 and freshman Sabrina Lopez (Los Angeles, Calif.) coming in right behind in 31st in 5:19.93. Chesimet’s time places her fifth all-time in the record books.
Junior Hannah-Soza Hodgkinson (Forest Ranch, Calif.) led the six competitors in the 3,000 meters, finishing 41st overall in 10:15.96, remaining in eighth place all-time, but improving the record by 26-hundreths of a second. Soza-Hodgkinson finished fourth in the first section of the timed finals.
Junior Jennifer Macias (Hermiston, Ore.) was close behind, finishing 43rd overall, finishing sixth in the 18-runner first section in 10:22.69. Freshman Regina Lopez (Los Angeles, Calif.), redshirt freshman Emily Olsen (Medford, Ore.) and freshman Taylor Nowlin (West Linn, Ore.) finished back-to-back-to-back from 45th to 47th.
