Volleyball Falls to UC Davis
Sept. 17, 2010
Davis, Calif. – The Oregon State volleyball team (6-7) was led by outside hitters senior Jill Sawatzky (St. Andrews, Manitoba) and sophomore Camille Saxton (Balzac, Alberta), who combined for 30 of the team’s 50 kills, but the Beavers fell to UC Davis (6-4) in four, 23-25, 19-25, 25-20, 22-25, Saturday evening.
Sawatzky racked up 19 kills, while Saxton added 11 with 13 digs. Sawatzky also tallied four blocks and an ace with Saxton chalking up a pair of aces.
“I think we again just needed to sustain siding out,” head coach Taras Liskevych said. “We were really erratic in our siding out and a little impatient. UC Davis did a great job hitting, particularly Jill [Sawatzky] and Megan [McBride]. We just needed a little bit better blocking, and it’s really frustrating and you see how well we served. I just think we ran into some problems early, especially in the second set. Set one was key. We were so far behind and came back, we just missed a couple of blocks. I think we really need to find a way to integrate people into the lineup, but I thought Dre [Shaw] showed some spunk out there, and I think that’s going to help us down the road.”
The Beavers started off slow falling behind the Aggies by as many as eight at 4-12, but Oregon State battled back to within one late at 22-23. Despite two big blocks by Sawatzky, UC Davis put the set away with a final kill to take the early 1-0 advantage.
Heading into the second set, the two teams exchanged three leads with four tie scores. But the Aggies strung together a late run to take the 2-0 lead. But the Beavers battled back in the third set to start with a short 4-0 run before stringing together a late run to reach 20 first behind freshman Mona Kressl’s (Langenzenn, Germany) serving. A final Kressl kill pulled Oregon State back within one set. But the Aggies came back to take set four and the match after trailing until the 20 point mark.
Sophomore Alyssa O’Neil (West Linn, Ore.) matched Saxton’s digs with 13 in the match, while freshman Becky Defoe (Bend, Ore.) tallied 11. Sophomore Ashley Eneliko (Seattle, Wash.) paced all blockers with seven, including a solo block.
UC Davis’ Allison Whitson and Morgan Borch both paced the Aggies’ offense with 14 kills, while libero Kayla Varney had a match-high 23 digs.
Oregon State completes non-conference play against Nevada on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. in the Beavers’ final match of the Aggie Invitational.
Oregon State Notes – Sophomore Camille Saxton earned her third double-double of the season with 11 kills and 13 digs.
